Position: Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 (Marine Harvest Studies Crew Lead - PCN 115288)

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting

for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 (Marine Harvest Studies Crew Lead) located in Ketchikan, Alaska!

What you will be doing:

Are you looking for an opportunity to work outside and contribute to the research and management of Southeast Alaska’s fisheries?

In this position, you will:

  • Lead the work of five Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 staff in collecting marine sport fishery harvest information and biological data from salmon and various groundfish species in the Ketchikan area.
  • Conduct a first level of review of all marine harvest creel data ensuring the information collected is accurate and complete.
  • Collect baseline sport harvest information in the Ketchikan area by conducting dockside angler interviews and collecting harvest, effort and biological/genetic data and samples.
  • Engage with the public in a positive and professional manner, representing the department and its mission.

While knowledge of Southeast Alaska’s sport fishery is a plus it is not required and training will be provided.

The mission of the Division of Sport Fish is to protect and improve the state's sport fishery resources. The Division of Sport Fish conducts marine harvest surveys in Southeast Alaska for Chinook and coho salmon, halibut, rockfish, lingcod and sablefish. The information gathered through the Marine Harvest Studies program is used to directly manage State of Alaska fisheries.

Some of our work is conducted as part of the Pacific Salmon Treaty and is considered the foundation on which the salmon management of Southeast Alaska is built.

The working conditions you can expect:

This position is based out of Ketchikan, AK. The position will be filled from mid‑May to mid‑September annually. Daily work environment includes working in the office up to two days a week and at local harbors/boat launches and leading a crew of technicians conducting interviews with marine sport anglers and obtaining biological information.

  • Experience using personal computers and Microsoft Office (including Word and Excel) for word processing and data entry.
  • Ability to work independently.

Note:

A valid driver’s license is required.

This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.

CPR and First Aid Training (desired but not required). High school graduation or the equivalent.

AND Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
