Minimum Bi-Weekly Pay: $1,751.77 (CAD $92.30), Total: $1,844.07 (as of 2026). Internal promotions are at minimum pay grade or up to 5% of current rate.
Position DescriptionThis role is central to maintaining a safe and secure juvenile detention environment. The officer is responsible for leading staff, ensuring adherence to policies, supervising youth activities, and protecting constitutional rights and the well‑being of detained youth.
Responsibilities- Adhere to agency and facility policies and procedures.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment for youth, oneself, and other staff.
- Ensure a zero‑tolerance environment for escapes, abuse, sexual harassment, and inappropriate conduct (Red Flag Behavior).
- Assist in the operation of the detention center, safeguarding the custody of all detained youth.
- Ensure detained youth services and programming comply with court orders, rules, and Departmental policies.
- Complete training to dispense medications accurately, and administer medication when a medical authority is absent.
- Perform duties in Master Control, admissions, releases, and transportation as needed.
- Supervise youth during all activities, applying directives, counseling, or protective action response (PAR) as necessary.
- Inspect the facility, visitors, and packages for contraband.
- Train and coach employees on duties and facility policies.
- Act as supervising officer when the supervisor is absent.
- Write reports and maintain required records on incidents, youth movement, and compliance violations.
- Prepare youths for court appearances and escort them to medical or judicial facilities.
- Use security and emergency equipment to protect youth and the facility.
- Conduct 10‑minute checks, 5‑minute checks, or continuous sight and sound supervision for detained youth in confinement or flagged as suicidal.
- Assess information via the Juvenile Justice Information System.
- Maintain detained youth counts as directed.
- Attend required meetings and complete all training mandated by DJJ’s Direct Care Training Policy.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license, reporting changes within 72 hours.
- Perform any other related duties as required.
Skills and Abilities
- Effective oral and written communication.
- Basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
- Report and record preparation and maintenance.
- Ability to work effectively with youth, co‑workers, supervisors, and the public.
- Good hygiene practice.
- Knowledge of Department and facility policies and procedures.
- Timely comprehension of verbal and written instructions.
- Determination of appropriate force when necessary.
- Observation of changes in youth behavior.
- Providing constructive feedback to correct behavior.
- Housekeeping practices to maintain facility sanitation.
- At least 19 years of age.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- No felony or misdemeanor involving perjury, false statements, or dishonorable discharge.
- Able to comply with Florida’s fingerprinting and background investigation requirements.
- Driver’s license: valid Florida license required. If hired on an out‑of‑state license, must obtain Florida license within 30 days. Must have a three‑year acceptable driving record.
- Successful completion of State of Florida Department of Juvenile Justice direct‑care training or certification within 180 days.
- For candidates not currently in the state direct‑care system, top‑ranking applicants must pass Ergometric’s IMPACT Assessment and Training Test.
- Ability to provide required background checks (sex offender, criminal, pre‑employment drug screening).
- Must be able to execute wages and other required documents and sign affidavits as stipulated by Florida law.
