Position Information
The Department of Environmental Services (ENV), Refuse Collection & Disposal Division, is hiring one (1) Scale Attendant. The position will be located at either the Keehi Transfer Station or the Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill. The Scale Attendant operates a computerized municipal vehicle scale to weigh refuse-carrying vehicles, assists customers, maintains accurate records, and provides information about refuse disposal policies and regulations.
PossibleAssignment – Keehi Transfer Station
- Regular work schedule:
Sunday through Wednesday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. - Days off:
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
- Regular work schedule:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. - Days off:
Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday
- Operate a computerized municipal vehicle scale to weigh vehicles carrying refuse.
- Process customer vehicles according to weigh station procedures.
- Verify customer accounts and solid waste discharge badges.
- Issue certificates of measure and other required documents.
- Review and correct improperly entered data.
- Continue scale operations using manual procedures when the computerized system is unavailable.
- Prepare daily and monthly summaries of refuse tonnage.
- Explain refuse disposal policies and regulations to customers.
- Work in an area with moving trucks.
- Possible exposure to heavy concentrations of fine dust.
- May be assigned to another facility weigh scale as required.
- Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared civil defense emergencies.

Minimum Qualification RequirementsAt the time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
Education RequirementEquivalent to graduation from high school (e.g., high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate). Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.
Experience RequirementOne year of work experience involving public contact.
Competencies And Skills NeededSuch experience must demonstrate the ability to:
- Make simple arithmetic computations.
- Compare names and numbers accurately.
- Keep records.
- Summarize materials and prepare simple reports.
- Understand and interpret laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, and policies pertinent to the weighing of vehicles and to the department.
- Determine and perform necessary corrective actions during system malfunctions and/or operator error.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
