Hana assists automotive mechanics in overhauling and repairing motorized equipment; makes routine mechanical repairs; and performs other related duties as required. Distinguishing characteristics:
This class differs from that of automotive mechanic in that the automotive mechanic helper assists automotive mechanics in repairing and overhauling gasoline and diesel engines and motorized equipment and makes routine mechanical repairs; whereas the automotive mechanic performs skilled mechanical work in overhauling and repairing gasoline and diesel engines and equipment.
The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.
- Assists in performing maintenance and repair work on automotive equipment, removing, disassembling and cleaning generators, fan belts, wheels, batteries and springs, tightening wheel bolts, installing batteries, replacing brake shoes/pads, checking lights and adjusting brakes;
- Issues chassis and motor lubricants;
- Keeps records of fuel on hand and issued;
- Changes oil and grease; drains and refills crankcase;
- Replaces and charges batteries;
- Checks, changes and repairs tires and tubes;
- Makes minor repairs independently;
- Supplies gasoline and diesel motorized equipment and vehicles with fuel, oil, water and air daily;
- Orders fuel and lubricants when needed;
- May perform road maintenance and related work in emergencies.
Training and experience: (1) Graduation from high school and one year of automotive repair experience under a skilled mechanic; or (2) any equivalent combination of training and experience. License requirement: possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license. Knowledge of: common practices, tools, materials and equipment used in the mechanic trade; servicing and operation of automotive equipment; automotive parts and accessories.
Ability to: service and operate motorized equipment; make minor repairs; understand and follow oral and written instructions. Health and physical condition: persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties. Physical effort grouping: heavy.
