Position Summary

The Assistant Professor of Automotive Technology is responsible for instructing a cohort of students over one academic year (Fall, Spring, Summer) in courses pertaining to obtaining a certificate or degree in Automotive Technology.

Responsibilities
  • Instruct students in specific areas and evaluate their learning progress.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and update curriculum materials, instructional resources, and assessment tools to meet industry standards and educational objectives.
  • Design and implement hands‑on training activities in laboratory and shop settings to reinforce theoretical concepts and develop students’ practical skills.
  • Interpret college policies for students in a positive manner.
  • Develop, maintain, and follow syllabi for courses.
  • Maintain professional conduct and appearance.
  • Provide academic advising and support services to students, including career guidance, program planning, and referral to support resources.
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry trends, technological advancements, and regulatory requirements in Automotive Technology to ensure program relevance and effectiveness.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and professional development activities to contribute to program improvement and faculty development.
  • Participate in advising, registration, and graduation as needed.
  • Serve on various departmental, divisional, and/or college committees.
  • Attend necessary conferences and seminars to remain current in the field.
  • Engage in outreach activities to promote the Automotive Technology Program, recruit students, and foster partnerships with industry stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in the fulfillment of the community college mission and purpose.
  • Teach in afternoons and/or evenings (non‑peak times); teach dual credit classes in high schools; develop and teach web classes; develop and teach hybrid or remote classes; and use instructional technology in the classroom.
Minimum

Position Requirements
  • ASE Certification required, or the ability to obtain certification within 6 months.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the automotive repair industry.
  • Associate’s degree in Automotive Technology, or the ability to earn one within a predetermined amount of time.
  • Prior teaching experience at the post‑secondary level preferred, with demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical concepts and engage diverse learners.
  • Proficiency in using instructional technology and learning management systems to support teaching and learning activities.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment.
  • Ability to deal professionally and courteously with a diverse student and employee population.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior classroom and lab work environment.
  • No or very limited physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • Limited exposure to physical risk.

  • Provide resources for safe operation of equipment and work environment; create and support workplace safety procedures.

  • Compensation for this 9‑month position is based on years of teaching at institutions of higher education and highest level of education. Base pay for no experience ranges from $42,052 for an associate’s degree to $51,894 for a doctorate. Overload and summer classes are paid separately.
