Summary/ObjectiveOperates a variety of contractor's equipment and trucks utilized in construction, maintenance and repair activities; performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of parks, facilities, street rights-of-way, and other public areas.

- Maintains city rights-of-way and other public areas.
- Operates trucks and construction or power equipment, such as tractors, mowers, boom-axe, backhoe, street sweeper, lift truck, cranes, chainsaws, etc.
- Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
- Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Assists in the installing and maintenance of traffic control devices.
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
- Follows safety procedures to prevent damage to public and private property and persons. Establishes traffic control as necessary in accordance with the TMUTCD.
- Regular attendance required.
- Controls traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required or assigned.
- Assists with other parks and maintenance items and necessary.
Education, Experience, and
Certifications:
- High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) is required.
- Considerable knowledge of heavy-equipment operating principles; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations; working knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in street and utility maintenance work.
- Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions. Ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions.
- Knowledge of proper procedures for use and care of mowing, trimming, wood chipper and chainsaw equipment. Knowledge of proper procedures for use and care of backhoes.
- Experience
Equipment Operator I - 0 to 4 years
Equipment Operator II - 3 to 8 years, 3 of which must be related to parks/right of way maintenance
Equipment Operator III - 7 to 12 years, 6 of which must be related to parks/right of way maintenance
Senior Equipment Operator - 12+ years, 8 of which must be related to parks/right of way maintenance
- Certifications
- Valid Texas Driver's License
- Valid Texas Commercial Driver's license (CDL) is preferred for all equipment operator levels above I.
