Overview

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work a schedule that may involve weekends, evenings, or nights (shift work)
  • Fulfill all duties related to the assignment as directed by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department and the United States Department of Justice, including policies in accordance with PREA, Texas Family Code, Bell County Employee Handbook, and Bell County Juvenile Services policies and procedures
  • Work with a diverse population
  • Conduct searches of persons and facilities to control contraband
  • Keep the chain of command aware of any critical situations that may arise
  • Maintain professional appearance and behavior
  • Provide shift coverage as scheduled and on an on‑call basis
  • Supervise, direct, and evaluate assigned staff; process employee concerns and problems; counsel, discipline, and complete employee performance appraisals
  • Coordinate, assign, and review work; establish schedules; monitor status; inspect completed work; answer questions; give advice and direction as needed
  • Manage the daily operation of the assigned area of responsibility
  • Monitor intake procedures and report preparation procedures
  • Assist staff during situations requiring the use of Handle with Care or the department‑approved behavior management program
  • Make routine inspections of facility and equipment; inform maintenance of necessary repairs
  • Visual inspect all living areas, hallways, bathrooms, and workstations for needed repairs and safety concerns, including perimeter checks
  • Inventory and procure cleaning, hygiene, and clothing supplies for residents
  • Review incident reports submitted by staff
  • Provide on‑the‑job training for new employees and assess their work
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels with supervision officers in accordance with TJJD standards
  • Actively supervise and provide feedback to Juvenile Supervision Officers to ensure a positive environment and overall safety of the assigned area
  • Conduct visual observations of each juvenile referred to the facility to determine appropriateness for acceptance
  • Review daily shift paperwork to ensure accuracy
  • May be moved to other positions within the department as necessary with or without notice
  • Perform other related duties as may be assigned by the Department Chain of Command
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Two to four year degree preferred but not required; at least 21 years of age; no disqualifying criminal history; high school diploma or equivalent; no certification revoked by TJJD; completion of TAC§344 training; completion of certification exam after employment.

  • Undergo background checks, including criminal background, motor vehicle records, employment records, or educational attainment
Physical Demands

Must possess physical stamina to address potentially hostile or physically aggressive clients; assist staff during situations requiring Handle with Care; transport youth in county vehicles; mostly indoor work with occasional outdoor tasks; light to medium lifting of 20–50 pounds; continual walking or standing.

Special Certifications and Licenses
  • Valid state driver’s license with acceptable driving history
  • Juvenile Supervision Officer Certification (to be obtained after employment)
  • TAC Cybersecurity Awareness Training (to be completed after employment)
  • Handle with Care certification (to be obtained after employment)
  • CPR/First Aid Certification (to be obtained after employment)
Language Requirement

Read, write, and speak the English language.

Compensation

Proposed Compensation: $30.29 per hour.
