Building Official

Performs a variety of routine and complex administrative, supervisory, and technical work in administering and enforcing building and related codes.

The employee will have the responsibility of:

Managing and supervising assigned operations to achieve goals within available resources
Planning and organizing workloads and staff assignments
Training, motivating, and evaluating assigned staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed
Providing leadership and oversight in the administration of building and construction codes, permit activity and fees, regulatory review of floodplain applications, development plan review, contractor registration and inspections
Overseeing field inspections of structural, foundations, framing, electrical, plumbing, mechanical systems, energy, etc. for compliance with adopted codes
Determining work procedures, prepares work schedules, and expedites workflow
Researching problems and complaints regarding commercial and residential buildings
Maintaining office documents within Permit and Retention policy and software
Administering the review of new subdivision plans for compliance with land use zoning and flood prevention ordinances
Investigating buildings damaged by fire or other causes to determine correctional or safety measures to be taken to permit their continued use
Conducting on-call emergency inspections
Preparing cases for Construction Board of Adjustments

The work environment will require the employee to:

Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high precarious places
Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles

As an employee with the city of Killeen some benefits are:

Education and Experience:

Graduation from high school or equivalent; and five (5) years of experience in general building inspections or construction and/or related fields; or
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in building technology, construction management, mechanical, electrical, plumbing or building construction, or closely related field, preferred.
Any equivalent combination or substitution of education and experience on a year for year basis

Special Requirements :

Must have a valid Texas driver’s license within ninety (90) days of hire
Must have a valid driver’s license by date-of-hire
Must obtain a State Plumbing Inspector license, Texas Flood Plain Administrators certification (CFM), and Certified Building Official or Master Code
Official from a nationally recognized code organization within twelve (12) months of employment.
Must obtain both ICC Residential and Commercial Energy Code certifications within twelve (18) months of employment.
Must be able to obtain within twelve (12) months other licenses or certifications required by local, state, or federal laws to perform the necessary job functions
