Job Title: Reading and Language Arts Campus Instructional Specialist – Secondary

DescriptionThe primary purpose of this role is to support teachers and improve student reading and writing achievement through coaching, professional development, curriculum development, and support. The specialist will improve literacy instruction, build teacher capacity, coach teachers on research‑based instructional strategies, model effective instruction, and analyze student data to identify strengths and weaknesses. The RLA CIS is a member of the campus leadership team and collaborates with campus leaders, teachers, and the Learning Services Department to ensure strong communication and partnership.
The role focuses on campus‑based instructional leadership and teacher coaching, with additional district‑level responsibilities such as professional development delivery, curriculum development, and cross‑campus collaboration.
- Campus‑Based Responsibilities:
- Lead implementation of district reading/language arts curriculum and aligned resources to ensure high‑quality Tier 1 instruction.
- Design and deliver campus‑specific RLA professional development.
- Mentor, coach, and provide feedback to RLA teachers; monitor implementation of improvement plans.
- Lead the campus RLA PLC to ensure weekly lesson internalization, data analysis, reteaching plans, and student work analysis.
- Coordinate tiered interventions and progress monitoring for at‑risk students.
- Conduct high‑leverage walkthroughs of RLA classrooms to calibrate instruction and provide immediate feedback.
- Collaborate with the principal, assistant principal, and instructional leaders on teacher performance and capacity building.
- Lead data meetings after every formative assessment, progress check, or benchmark to adjust instruction.
- Assist with local testing: scheduling, administration, and analysis of results.
- Organize and distribute instructional resources for classroom use.
- Communicate clearly with teachers, administrators, and the community.
- Serve as liaison between district curriculum staff and campus leadership.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- District‑Level Responsibilities:
- Serve as campus or district trainer for professional development, including NTI, mentor training, and appraisal system.
- Lead RLA curriculum projects; assist in writing curriculum and pacing guides.
- Participate in cross‑campus leadership meetings; provide RLA expertise to other campuses.
- Contribute to district‑level initiatives in RLA assessment, instructional planning, and professional learning.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Provides functional supervision and leadership to reading/language arts teachers and PLC leads in collaboration with the campus administrative team.
Physical and Mental DemandsStandard office equipment, personal computer, phone systems. Prolonged sitting, regular kneeling/squatting, bending, pushing/pulling, twisting. Requires close and distance vision; repetitive hand motion, frequent keyboarding and mouse use; moderate lifting up to 44 lb, occasional heavy lifting above 45 lb. District‑wide travel to multiple campuses; occasional travel outside district. Possible weekend and evening work for special school functions.
QualificationsEducation/Certification: Five years of successful teaching experience in the subject and level. Valid Texas teaching certificate in the subject and level or equivalent credentials. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Master’s degree in the subject area is preferred. Principal certificate or enrollment in a leadership preparation program is preferred.

Skills:
Experience coaching teachers in a high‑need environment; evidence of significant student growth gains in RLA; ability to lead courageous conversations and manage adult learning; proficiency with computer software and interpretation of test data.
Pay Grade: AP3 (205A/210A); position may be eligible for stipend.
