Job Description

Evaluates patients upon arrival to the Emergency Room and prioritizes care using the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) tool. Assigns patients to appropriate treatment areas based on observations, vital signs, brief history, and ESI triage level. Performs, documents, and reports all procedures and assessments according to departmental and hospital policy. Assesses, documents, and intervenes in cases of suspected abuse or neglect. Recognizes potential emergency or life‑threatening situations and implements preventive measures.

Follows hospital protocol and physician orders regarding the use of restraints when applicable. Maintains knowledge of therapeutic effects, interactions, and administration of medication. Accurately administers and initiates intravenous therapy, including medication, blood, blood products, and cardiac drips. Uses the Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) process and electronic medical record (EMR) for patient information retrieval. Communicates effectively with healthcare teams, responds to requests, builds rapport, and participates in team problem‑solving.

Maintains licensure(s), skills, and education required to work in the Emergency Department. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • General knowledge of professional nursing principles and techniques used in the assessment, care, and treatment of the ED patient [Required]
  • General knowledge of the pharmacological process in the appropriate administration or delivery of medications used to treat an ED patient [Required]
  • Skills to maintain effective working relationships with health professionals and others to create an environment that is conducive to carrying out the mission of the facility [Required]
  • Skills to communicate (verbal and written) effectively to direct the overall professional nursing services in a manner which encourages the open exchange of ideas and information [Required]
  • General knowledge of Electronic Medical Records (EMR’s) [Preferred]
  • Ability for independent, professional judgment on clinical issues, asking for supervisory input when needed [Required]
  • Compliance with all safety and infection‑control policies required to prevent injury to patients, employees, or self; institutes emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in patient’s conditions [Required]
  • Responsibility for department supplies, equipment, and adherence to efficient time management and utilization of patient resources [Required]
  • Continuous interface with fellow employees, physicians, and patients; establishment of good relationships with community agencies [Required]
  • Working with pediatric/adult/geriatric patients in a modern well‑equipped environment; exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, potential for physical harm from non‑compliant patients; may require working weekends, irregular hours, and holidays; subject to extended hours; significant standing/walking; assists with lifting and moving patients; manual dexterity and mobility; occasional lifting of supplies/equipment; use of personal protective equipment when required; must meet physical requirements per hospital standard [Required]
