Join BSWH McLane Children’s Hospital as a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Registered Nurse and be part of something better. The unit provides advanced care for critically ill children in a 16-bed PICU with a dedicated team of specialists.

Full-Time, Nights, 36 hours per week, 7P-7A

The pediatric critical care team cares for children who are very ill or medically unstable. Critically ill children stay in the PICU, a designated area with sophisticated technologies and highly trained staff. The PICU care team includes intensivists, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, Child Life specialists, social workers, pastoral staff and dietitians who provide round-the-clock treatment.

Serving children from birth to 18 with acute and chronic critical conditions.

We are a team-oriented unit that focuses on growth and development. The PICU has multiple unit-based committees and an active confetti committee to celebrate achievements. The unit has received the Daisy unit award with many winners and nominees.

Essential Functions Of The Role

• Clinical Judgment:
  Conducts accurate clinical assessments, prioritizes patient and family needs, develops and evaluates the nursing plan of care, and modifies the plan to achieve outcomes.
• Clinical Inquiry:
  Evaluates quality and effectiveness of nursing practice; supports evidence-based changes and participates in quality/performance improvement initiatives.
• Caring Practices:
  Creates a compassionate, safe, and therapeutic environment; develops therapeutic relationships with patients and families; manages pain and promotes comfort and healing.

• Knowledge of nursing and patient care standards; familiarity with certifying and accrediting bodies; hospital policies and procedures.
• Medical terminology and health promotion concepts; pharmacology basics including dosages and adverse effects.
• Understanding of nursing ethics and patient privacy rights.
• Clear verbal and written communication; strong interpersonal skills; critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to observe changes in patient conditions and communicate these changes to the care team.
• Ability to provide age-specific, patient-centered care and develop/modify care plans accordingly.
• General computer skills (e.g., Office, EMR, scheduling, email).
