Job Title: Abrams Tank Mechanic

Company: General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS)

Type of Position: 6 month contract to hire role

Candidate Requirements:

  • This role is ONLY open to US Citizens;
    Permanent Residents and other work authorizations are NOT permitted because the role requires eligibility to obtain a secret clearance (only available to US Citizens). Clearance isn’t required to start, but all candidates must be eligible to obtain one. A drug screen (including cannabis) is required; no exceptions (e.g., medical card).
  • This role is subject to U.S. government-mandated Anthropometric Standards Requirements (ASR). Eligible candidates must weigh 260 lbs or less (including PPE and clothing) and be 6'4" or shorter in height.

Job Location: Killeen, TX. This role will be based at Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood).

Compensation: Base rate of $26.38 per hour.

  • Health & Wellness (H&W) benefit: eligible employees receive an additional $4.93 per hour in lieu of enrolling in the company‑provided health insurance plan.
  • H&W benefit becomes effective on the first day of the month after 30 days of employment.
  • Effective hourly pay with H&W benefit: $31.31/hour ($26.38 base + $4.93 H&W) for regular time hours (up to 40 hours per week).
  • Overtime (hours over 40/week) paid at 1.5x base rate: $39.57/hour.

Overview: HRU Technical Resources is partnering with a leading defense contractor to hire Abrams Tank Mechanics. In this role you will:

  • Maintain mechanics on variations of the Abrams Tank (M1A1 SA, M1A2 SEP V2 and SEP V3) for the GDLS Fort Cavazos team.
  • Perform preventive maintenance checks and services and install maintenance work orders (MWO) on Abrams Tanks (M1A1ED
    , M1A2SE
    P V2 and V3).
  • Read and interpret troubleshooting and diagnostic procedures and flow diagrams for systems, subsystems and components.
  • Maintain accountability of special tools, test equipment, and property.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by leadership responsible for maintenance.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required at minimum; higher education (Associate or Bachelor’s degree) is welcome.
  • One or more years of general mechanical maintenance experience, preferably on the Abrams family of tanks (diesel mechanics acceptable but military experience highly preferred).
  • Basic knowledge of tools and test equipment for military vehicle maintenance.
  • Eligibility for US Military facilities or bases; NACI clearance if required; must be US Citizenship and able to pass a background check (clearance not required to start).
  • Team‑oriented, works effectively in field and shop environments, on and off military installations.
  • Required to work at heights, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, climb, and work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Valid State Driver’s License and ability to obtain a tank driver’s license.
  • Meet anthropometric requirements (ASR) for entry into driver’s station or enclosed military vehicle.
  • Ability to travel as required to support GDLS Fort Cavazos maintenance, fielding and retrofit activities for state‑side GDLS requirements.
  • Successfully pass the Job Proficiency Certification for Abrams fleet vehicles.
  • Work autonomously with government personnel.

Work Environment:

  • 1st (day) shift role with occasional overtime as needed.
  • Offer contingent upon a drug screen (including cannabis) and a background check.
