Responsibilities

The Medical Assistant assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of an urgent care provider. The role includes:

  • Managing the check‑in and registration process, interviewing patients, measuring vital signs (pulse, temperature, blood pressure, weight, height) and recording information on patient charts.
  • Drawing and collecting blood samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Preparing treatment rooms for examination.
  • Conducting point‑of‑care testing (flu, strep, urinalysis, ECG, HCG) and providing patient information to the provider.
  • Performing preliminary physical tests and escalating critical cases to the provider.
  • Sequencing and maintaining supplies and equipment, including daily controls, calibration, QA/QC logs, and preventive maintenance.
  • Completing order sheets and maintaining supply inventory levels.
  • Maintaining medical records, scanning charts, and ensuring secure patient information.
  • Handling front‑desk duties such as processing co‑pays, scheduling appointments, answering calls, and managing postal correspondence.
  • Executing opening and closing duties, including end‑of‑day communication and cash reconciliation.
Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Graduate of a Medical Assisting Program preferred.

Work Experience

  • Medical Assistant experience preferred.
  • Front desk experience preferred.

Basic Life Support (BLS) required at the time of hire, obtained through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.

Required Certifications

Under one year of Medical Assistant experience requires one of the following certifications at the time of hire:

  • CCMA – Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (verified through NHA)
  • CMA – Certified Medical Assistant (verified through AAMA)
  • RMA – Registered Medical Assistant (verified through AMT)
  • NCMA – National Certified Medical Assistant (verified through NCCT)
  • NRCMA – Nationally Registered Medical Assistant (verified through the National Association for Health Professionals)

Alternative qualifications include:

  • 1+ years of Medical Assistant experience in a hospital or urgent care setting, or 1+ years of phlebotomy experience.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, LPN or RN, EMT, or CNA.
  • CPOE certification for order entry required within two weeks of start date.
  • Candidates without a Medical Assistant certification must obtain one within 15 months of the start date to remain eligible for continued employment.
Essential Functions

Conduct patient registration and verification of insurance, process copays, schedule appointments, coordinate provider referrals, answer patient questions and inform staff of patient flow. Maintain supplies, inventory, and chart scanning; manage front desk communication; perform equipment QA/QC; and execute opening/closing procedures.

Basic Medical Assistant duties; type quickly; basic computer knowledge; proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; detail oriented; strong written and verbal communication; ability to treat all persons with fairness, respect and sensitivity to cultural/social differences. Ability to participate as part of a team and accomplish goals.
