The Wisconsin Veterans Home at King (WVHK) is recruiting for a limited‑term employment (LTE) Nursing Assistant 1 (Trainee) to join our Nursing team. The position begins with an 18‑day training class that will start on September 8, 2026, and is limited to eight staff members. WVHK is a 24/7/365 long‑term care facility located on the picturesque shoreline of the Chain O’Lakes, off Highway 10, between Stevens Point and Appleton, Wisconsin.
PositionSummary
This entry‑level certified nursing assistant (CNA) or nursing assistant trainee will provide direct and indirect basic nursing care to up to 60 geriatric, disabled, and/or cognitively impaired residents in accordance with standards set by the American Nurses Association, gerontological nursing standards, federal, state, and VA regulations, and the policies and procedures of the Wisconsin Veterans Home and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The trainee will participate in and help maintain appropriate programs of care, treatment, training, and daily living for residents in assigned areas.
- Provide basic nursing care following written care plans to address therapeutic, preventative, restorative, spiritual, psychosocial, cognitive, and rehabilitative needs.
- Use cognitive techniques to help residents with memory care maintain the highest functional level.
- Work as part of the health care team under the direct supervision of a Nursing Supervisor and the direction of licensed nursing staff.
- Able to attend all hours of training.
- 16 years of age on or before the effective date of appointment (September 8, 2026).
- Work or volunteer experience in customer service.
- Experience performing care procedures in formal or informal settings such as infant, child, adult, or animal care.
- Computer experience.
- Experience with adult or disabled populations (e.g., Assisted Living, Private Care, In‑Home).
- Able to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people and/or experience working in a team setting.
- Problem‑solving skills.
- Computer experience in health care.
- CPR certification.
Starting wage is $19.36 per hour, with additional compensation for nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime. Nursing Assistant 1 is in pay schedule‑pay range 06‑10. For current or eligible former state employees, compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan effective at the time of hire. This position does not offer employee benefits and is not represented by a bargaining unit.

All hours of training must be completed: core hours of 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday‑Friday (approximately three weeks).
After training, shifts in greatest need are PM (1:45 p.m.–10:15 p.m.) and NOC (10:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m.). Scheduling flexibility is available for LTE positions based on departmental need. LTE jobs are limited to 1,039 hours in a 12‑month period and do not include employee benefits.
Physical requirements:
Assist with mobility efforts; wear protective clothing and use special safety equipment; lift, carry, push, pull, reach, stand, sit, kneel, squat; stand and/or walk up to 75 % of an eight‑hour day.
Due to the nature of the position, a criminal background check will be conducted prior to an offer of employment. Employment is contingent upon passing a pre‑employment tuberculosis (TB) skin test.
