The Materials Lab at ADOT ensures road projects comply with state and federal specifications by testing materials collected from the field. The technician is responsible for receiving samples, preparing and conducting tests, and providing data to support quality assurance and project documentation.
Responsibilities- Transportation Construction Technician 1 (Entry Level, $20.36/hr, Grade 17)
Inspection of highway construction projects; use specialized software and Google applications; read and interpret plans, contract documents, and specifications; perform field tests; compute areas of irregular shapes; attend safety, partnering, and training meetings. - Transportation Construction Technician 2 (Intermediate, $22.68/hr, Grade 18)
Inspect highway construction for compliance, examine materials and surface conditions, perform field material tests, review engineering project records, research and interpret MVD policy, ASR statutes, and regulations, consult manuals and codes, record workflow, and attend training and safety meetings. - Transportation Construction Technician 3 (Senior, $27.34/hr, Grade 19)
Perform a broad scope of high‑level duties: inspect construction work for compliance, document and quantify records, consult with engineers, consult manuals, specifications, drawings, and regulations, record work history, and review project records.
Preferred Experience
- Technician 1: 1 year of job‑related construction experience, including civil engineering principles, construction inspection methods, materials testing procedures, and reading construction documents.
- Technician 2: 2 years of job‑related construction experience, including civil engineering principles, construction inspection methods, materials testing procedures, and reading construction documents.
- Technician 3: 3 years of job‑related construction experience, including civil engineering principles, construction inspection methods, materials testing procedures, and reading construction documents.
- Transportation Construction Technician I – One year construction related experience.
- Transportation Construction Technician II – Two years construction related experience.
- Transportation Construction Technician III – Three years construction related experience.
- American Concrete Institute and Arizona Technical Testing Institute Certification required within 1 year of hire date.
- A medical/physical evaluation is required prior to appointment.
- Valid class‑appropriate driver’s license and current driver training are required for employees who operate vehicles on state business.
