General Manager

DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBILITIES The General Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, operation, profitability, and performance of the retail nursery store. This position ensures excellent customer service, effective employee management, accurate inventory control, attractive merchandising, workplace safety, and achievement of sales and financial goals.
• Direct and oversee all daily retail nursery operations, including opening and closing procedures, customer service, sales, staffing, scheduling, inventory, merchandising, cash handling, and facility maintenance.
• Lead, train, coach, motivate, and develop store employees to achieve operational, customer-service, and sales expectations.
• Recruit, interview, select, onboard, and retain qualified employees in partnership with Human Resources.
• Prepare employee schedules according to customer traffic, seasonal demands, payroll budgets, and operational needs.
• Monitor employee attendance, conduct, productivity, and job performance. Provide timely coaching, recognition, corrective action, and performance evaluations in accordance with company policy.
• Promote a respectful, professional, inclusive, and team-oriented work environment.
• Establish and communicate daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal sales goals to employees.
• Monitor sales, labor, expenses, inventory, margins, and other key performance indicators. Develop corrective action plans when goals are not achieved.
• Review financial and operational reports and identify opportunities to increase sales, control costs, reduce losses, and improve profitability.
• Maintain appropriate inventory levels based on customer demand, seasonal trends, sales history, and available space.
• Coordinate merchandise ordering, receiving, pricing, labeling, stocking, rotation, replenishment, transfers, and product markdowns. Maintain attractive, organized, fully stocked, and seasonally appropriate merchandise displays.
• Ensure plants and nursery merchandise are properly watered, maintained, displayed, rotated, and removed when damaged or unsellable.
• Ensure pricing, product descriptions, promotional signage, and point-of-sale information are accurate.
• Build strong relationships with customers and ensure employees provide knowledgeable, courteous, and timely service.
• Address and resolve customer complaints, returns, delivery concerns, and service issues professionally and consistently.
• Maintain knowledge of nursery products, gardening supplies, seasonal merchandise, promotions, and services to assist customers and train employees.
• Coordinate with vendors, buyers, distribution personnel, landscapers, delivery teams, and company leadership to support store operations.
• Oversee cash registers, deposits, refunds, discounts, voids, and other financial transactions. Investigate and address discrepancies.
• Implement loss-prevention practices and protect company merchandise, equipment, funds, records, and other assets.
• Ensure compliance with company policies and applicable federal, state, and local employment, safety, licensing, environmental, and operational requirements.
• Conduct regular safety inspections, correct identified hazards, document incidents, and ensure employees receive required safety training.
• Ensure fertilizers, pesticides, equipment, and other regulated or potentially hazardous materials are stored, handled, and sold according to applicable requirements and company procedures.
• Maintain the cleanliness, organization, appearance, and security of the store, nursery yard, greenhouse, warehouse, loading areas, parking areas, offices, and employee spaces.
• Ensure tools, vehicles, irrigation systems, forklifts, and other equipment are inspected, maintained, and operated only by authorized employees.
• Respond appropriately to emergencies, workplace injuries, customer incidents, security concerns, and severe weather conditions.
• Communicate store performance, staffing concerns, maintenance needs, inventory issues, and other significant matters to appropriate company leadership.
