About the Position
Internal candidates will be given preference. Performs supervisory and advanced journey-level security work involving the custody, control, care, and welfare of inmates within the Adult Detention Facility. This classification represents the advanced level in the Detention Officer series and serves as the first-line supervisor.
Job SummaryPositions at this level are distinguished by the complexity of assigned duties and the responsibility for interpreting and applying established policies, procedures, rules, and regulations with sound judgment and consistency. Incumbents provide direct supervision to detention staff, ensure operational compliance with facility standards, and maintain security and safety within assigned areas.
Employees in this classification are expected to be fully trained and proficient in all related detention procedures and capable of independently overseeing shift operations, responding to incidents, and supporting facility administration in maintaining order and institutional integrity.

- Prepares performance evaluations; recommends disciplinary actions; may approve vacations and time off; prepares work schedules and assignments.
- Supervises the activities of assigned personnel; monitors reports and record keeping activities filed by assigned personnel for completeness, accuracy, and adherence to policy and procedure guidelines; instructs personnel in departmental policies, procedures and techniques; and provides training.
- Meets, reviews and responds to inmates' grievances, requests and questions.
- Briefs probation officers as to the status, behavior and performance of inmates.
- Meets and responds to inquiries of inmates from irate family members.
- Observes and monitors activities of inmates in cells, day rooms, yards, showers, and other areas of the detention facility.
- Maintains surveillance and maintains chronological logs and records of facility and inmate activity.
- Performs strip and other searches of inmates and cells for contraband.
- Controls movement and activities of inmates within the facility. Opens and closes security doors.
- Performs head counts and lockdowns of inmates.
- Subdues combative inmates and potential riot situations.
- Observes inmates in booking and in facility population for signs of under the influence, injury, illness, or behavior apart from the norm including potential suicidal tendencies and if warranted, transports to appropriate facility for assistance.
- Reviews and investigates infractions committed by inmates in custody.
- Oversees the serving meals and distribution of equal portions to inmates. Inventories return of plates and utensils.
- Briefs relieving shift officers.
- Enters data into computer for compilation of current facility roster and population and other related activities.
- Prepares complete, accurate reports, records and logs.
- Communicates and acts in a professional manner with the public, co-workers, and work contacts.
- Performs related work as required.
- Performs special assignments as requested.
- Exercise regular and predictable attendance and punctuality in accordance with Mohave County Personnel Policies and Procedures.
- High School Diploma/GED (General Education Degree).
- Eighteen months (1.5 years) progressively responsible experience as a Detention Officer I or related detention center or correctional facility experience or comparable work experience, and preferably supplemented by supervisory course work.
- OR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications.
- Requires successful completion of at least one (1) year as a Mohave County Detention Officer.
- Must pass drug screen post offer.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license for operation of motor vehicles on Arizona roads at the start of employment and maintain said license while employed in this position.
- Provide acceptable driving history at no cost to the County.
- May be required to successfully complete psychological, polygraph, health-related and physical agility testing appropriate to law enforcement individuals.
