Heavy Equipment Mechanic
CITY OF KINGMAN | EQUIPMENT MECHANIC | FLEET DIVISION - PUBLIC WORKS WORK SCHEDULE
MONDAY - THURSDAY 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM
We’re looking for an experienced Equipment Mechanic to join our team and help maintain and repair a wide range of City vehicles and equipment, including fire apparatus, garbage trucks, buses, police vehicles, mowers, and heavy equipment. This role is essential to keeping our fleet safe and ready to support City operations. You will diagnose mechanical issues, perform preventative maintenance, complete repairs, and ensure all vehicles and equipment meet safety and regulatory standards.
This position reports to the assigned supervisor and does not supervise others.

You’re someone who communicates well, stays organized, and can manage multiple repairs and priorities while maintaining a strong customer‑service mindset. You thrive in a busy shop environment and understand how important a reliable fleet is to public safety and City operations.
This position requires employees to provide their own set of hand tools.
- Graduation from high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by some trade school certificate or specialized training related to automotive and diesel mechanics;
- Five (5) years of related experience; or
- Any combination of experience and training demonstrating the knowledge and experience to perform the work.
- Valid Arizona Driver License or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
- Public Works assignment: CDL endorsement required or ability to obtain within 6 months.
- Motorcycle Operator License may be required depending on assignment.
- ASE and/or Emergency Vehicle Technician certifications are preferred and may be required.
- Must provide own hand tools.
- Additional technical certifications may be required based on assignment.
Most of your day is spent inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing a wide range of City vehicles and equipment, including engines, electrical systems, brakes, hydraulics, and A/C units. Our fleet spans everything from fire apparatus and garbage trucks to pickups, sedans, and other light‑duty vehicles.
Preventative Maintenance & Safety Checks (30%)You’ll perform routine servicing, safety inspections, and preventative maintenance to keep vehicles reliable, reduce downtime, and meet all safety and regulatory standards.
Support & Customer Service (10%)Work includes completing work orders, assisting with emergency field repairs, supporting other divisions, transporting equipment, and providing professional customer service to drivers and coworkers.
Shop Safety & Compliance (10%)Responsibilities include keeping the shop organized and safe, handling hazardous materials properly, maintaining SDS documentation, and following all safety and environmental regulations.
