Position: GIS Project Coordinator (PT)

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Performs professional, technical, and administrative work coordinating Geographic Information System (GIS) projects, maintaining spatial data, developing maps and applications, supporting GIS technology, and facilitating the use of geographic information throughout the City.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for coordinating the development, implementation, maintenance, and enhancement of the City’s Geographic Information System and related projects. Work includes coordinating GIS projects across departments; supporting field data collection; assisting with system integrations; and providing technical assistance and training to GIS users. Employee works collaboratively with City departments, consultants, contractors, utility providers, governmental agencies, and other stakeholders to identify operational needs and develop GIS-based solutions that improve data accessibility, infrastructure management, service delivery, planning, and organizational decision‑making.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Planning Director and is evaluated through conferences, project outcomes, system performance, data accuracy, customer service, and the effectiveness and quality of work performed.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Develops, maintains, updates, and validates spatial databases, GIS layers, maps, applications, dashboards, web maps, and related geographic information products.
  • Collaborates with City departments to identify GIS needs, establish project requirements, define deliverables, develop project schedules, and implement GIS‑based solutions that support departmental operations and organizational objectives.
  • Collects, compiles, converts, integrates, analyzes, and interprets spatial and non‑spatial data from internal and external sources.
  • Performs spatial analysis, data queries, geoprocessing, address matching, geographic modeling, and other technical GIS functions to support planning, infrastructure management, public safety, utilities, economic development, asset management, and operational decision‑making.
  • Creates digital and printed maps, reports, exhibits, presentations, dashboards, and other visual products for City staff, management, elected officials, partner agencies, and the public.
  • Coordinates the development and maintenance of GIS data standards, naming conventions, metadata, documentation, quality‑control procedures, and data governance practices.
  • Reviews GIS data for accuracy, completeness, consistency, integrity, and compliance with established standards; identifies and corrects data discrepancies and coordinates necessary updates with applicable departments.
  • Supports the development, maintenance, and improvement of GIS web applications, mobile applications, public‑facing mapping resources, dashboards, and field data collection tools.
  • Assists departments with the implementation and use of GIS technology for asset inventory, infrastructure maintenance, inspections, work‑order management, capital improvement planning, emergency response, land‑use planning, and other operational functions.
  • Coordinates field data‑collection activities utilizing Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment, mobile devices, surveying information, aerial imagery, and other available technologies.
  • Provides technical support, guidance, demonstrations, and training to employees regarding GIS applications, mapping tools, mobile data collection, data standards, and related technologies.
  • Develops and maintains project plans, technical documentation, workflow procedures, system configurations, data dictionaries, user guides, training materials, and other records related to GIS operations and projects.
  • Assists with GIS related planning, budgeting, procurement, contract administration, grant applications, and special projects as assigned.
  • Ensures GIS data, applications, and processes comply with applicable City policies, data security requirements, licensing agreements, records retention requirements, and professional standards.
