Performs responsible semi-skilled work assisting in the maintenance and repair of city streets, sidewalks and rights-of-way.
Work is performed under immediate supervision.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASSAn employee in this class performs manual labor involving the repair and maintenance of city streets, sidewalks, and rights-of-way. Employees work as a member of a crew led by a Street Equipment Operator in loading and unloading materials for the proper operation of the department.
Employees will also be subject to standby and emergency call-back.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Participates in replacing, repairing, installing, fabricating and erecting street signs.
- Performs various street maintenance duties such as repairing curbs, patching holes, spreading asphalt and repairing sidewalks.
- Loads and unloads gravel, dirt, chemicals, and other materials, tools, and equipment.
- Assists in the maintenance of city rights-of-way by picking up trash in front of mowing.
- Participates in replacing, repairing, installing, fabricating and erecting street signs.
- May assist in cutting grass and trees.
- Clean work areas, spills, or scattered debris around collection sites.
- Performs related tasks as required.
- Performs additional duties essential to the Public Works Department and/or City needs, as needed and deemed necessary by management.
- General knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in collection of solid waste.
- Ability to acquire a knowledge within a reasonable time period of the methods and techniques of solid waste collection and routes.
- Ability to accurately follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform difficult manual labor for extended periods of time, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
- Ability to use department related equipment and materials safely with training.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to read and write and any combination of experience and education which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS- Work is generally performed in outside environmental conditions in which the employee is subject to workplace hazards including exposure to operating mechanical equipment and atmospheric conditions with extreme cold and heat for extended periods of time. Employee is subject to a level of noise requiring hearing protection and workers to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.
- In addition, the employee is subject to a chance of injury from basic job requirements.
- Must be able to perform the basic life operational skills of climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform occasional heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
- Must possess visual acuity to read maps and diagrams; to operate a vehicle. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
- Legally eligible to work in the United States.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License.
