Job Scope

Generally responsible for performing all aspects of complete designs for mechanical/piping assignments using theoretical knowledge and practical design methods. This level is expected to assist in the design of larger and more complex mechanical/piping assignments under general supervision.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Familiarity with and utilization of department design and drafting standards.
  • Familiarity with project scope, specifications and design criteria upon assignment to a project task team.
  • Recognizing and communicating scope and design changes promptly.
  • Developing the design and drafting of complex piping drawings given basic information such as P&’s, GA’s, piping specifications, equipment drawings, etc.
  • Performing field design work to ascertain current conditions, locate new systems, communicate with client personnel and assist in construction.
  • Performing survey and measurement tasks for existing equipment and piping.
  • Preparing material take‑offs from piping sketches for construction estimates.
  • Planning and managing site design activities for optimum results.
  • On‑site assistance during startup.
  • Preparing man‑hour estimates for your activities.
  • Providing technical guidance to less experienced drafting personnel in the department.
  • Coordinating work activities with other staff members and the discipline lead.
  • Producing mechanical/piping installation specifications with engineering review and approval.
Ideal Background Education

Associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer-Aided Drafting is required.

Certification

Certification is not required at this level.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical/piping drafting and design.

• Knowledge and application of piping materials, supports, restraints and flexibility analysis.

• Ability to coordinate with a pipe stress engineer for complex systems.

• Knowledge of good design practices for sizing all piping systems and selecting specialty items with the aid of engineering specialists.

• Drafting of P&’s and GA’s, and review of vendor equipment and in‑line instruments from a piping perspective.

• Familiarity with specifications (ASTM, ASME, ANSI, etc.) and installation details of construction bulk materials and equipment.

• Ability to create accurate mechanical/piping installation documents from vendor equipment drawings.

• Understanding of workflow/information flow between disciplines, schedule and budget constraints, and information requirements for all mechanical/piping deliverables.

• Expertise in estimating completion, construction cost, detailed engineering schedule and man‑hour budget for small projects or parts of larger projects.

• Knowledge of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.

• Leadership experience in leading a small team to deliver on commitments.

• Proficient in Aveva 3D and Micro Station/AutoCAD; working knowledge of Bluebeam and Truview Pro; proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

• Good communication, presentation, and cross‑discipline team skills, including virtual team and cross‑divisional relationships.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time, and to navigate in a chemical manufacturing environment.
