Position: Naturalist Intern Bays Mountain Park (Temporary/Seasonal)

The Naturalist Intern will assist in developing and presenting educational programs that promote conservation ethics, environmental education, and appreciation of natural resources within Bays Mountain Park. This position offers hands‑on experience in environmental education and natural resource management.

Job Duties /Daily Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate conservation and environmental education programs for diverse groups, including youth and adults.
  • Organize and lead recreational activities in county parks, such as interpretive hikes, kayaking, and operating the barge.
  • Maintain program attendance records and assist in evaluating program effectiveness.
  • Assist in Trail Maintenance by attending multiple trail workdays.
  • Collaborate with staff on multiple conservation/resource management projects including Nest Watch and preliminary wetland studies research.
  • Provide information to the public regarding park facilities, rules, and regulations.
  • Lead volunteers through various on-site projects.
  • Assist in the development of educational materials and displays.
  • Conduct educational programs and interpretive talks for park visitors and organized groups.
  • Perform light maintenance tasks related to program activities, such as setting up equipment and preparing program areas.
  • Assist Ranger staff with animal husbandry.
  • Hike trails to report necessary maintenance and to interact with visitors.
Preferred Requirements:
  • Demonstrated knowledge and teaching ability in natural resources and environmental subjects.
  • Experience working with youth and implementing educational programs.
  • Strong public speaking skills and the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in planning and participating in outdoor recreational activities, such as hiking and kayaking.
  • Basic knowledge of resource management practices and local natural history.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and establish positive working relationships with the public and colleagues.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental education, natural resources, conservation, outdoor recreation, or related field.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public, including children, families, and adult audiences.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and function as part of a team in a public‑facing environment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and traverse uneven or rugged terrain.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds and perform light manual labor related to program activities.
  • Willingness and availability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Possession of a valid Tennessee or Virginia driver’s license or ability to obtain one prior to employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Coursework toward, completion of, or equivalent experience related to environmental science, biology, zoology, park administration, recreation, education, or a closely related field.
  • Experience or demonstrated ability in:
  • Environmental or conservation education
  • Working with youth or the general public
  • Outdoor recreation activities such as hiking, kayaking, or interpretive programming
  • Knowledge of local natural history, wildlife, or resource management practices.
  • Strong public speaking, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Experience assisting with programs, research projects, volunteer coordination, or community outreach.
