Building Systems Specialist l FTE

We are currently accepting applications for Building Systems Specialist I . Under the supervision of the Plant Operations Supervisor, the Building Systems Specialist I is responsible for all aspects of the operation and maintenance of HVAC systems in a family of schools. The Building Systems Specialist I is also responsible for general maintenance duties.

• Possesses a secondary school diploma.
• The incumbent will have completed 4th Class Stationary Engineering certificate or all modules of the Building Systems course, and, G2 gas licence or OBT 2 oil burner ticket.
• Equivalent licences may be recognized.
• Two years experience is required.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• A valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle is required.

• Strong computer skills with programs relating to building operations is mandatory i.e. energy management
• Strong knowledge in HVAC systems, water and sewage systems, welding, carpentry, electrical and plumbing maintenance
• Basic knowledge of pneumatic and electrical control systems
• Working knowledge of building construction including the building envelope, structure and systems
• Basic knowledge of applicable codes
• Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS and related regulations
• Broad based general maintenance skills are essential i.e. plumbing, woodworking, electrical
• Ability to climb heights, lift moderate to heavy weights and work in confined spaces such as crawl spaces and plumbing structures
• Proficient in interpreting blueprints
• Basic proficiency in spreadsheet and word processing, spreadsheet application, e-mail and Internet software
• Strong organizational skills, ability to organize both priorities and people in a fast paced changing environment
• Ability to effectively communicate within the department, other departments within the School Board, school staff, students, parents and third parties
• Willingness to engage in continuing education and skills upgrading
• Demonstrated self starter who can plan and troubleshoot problems as they arise
• Demonstrated ability to interact, using tact and diplomacy, on the job
• Demonstrated ability to work as a contributing team member

• Performs other related duties, as required
• Demonstrates good attendance and work in a healthy and safe manner
• Removes graffiti from the building
• Checks school roof and repairs or reports the problem to Head Custodian
• Shovels snow, salt and sand walkways when required
• Performs various custodial duties including maintaining the cleanliness of the boiler and mechanical rooms
• Inspects building for security cameras (if required)
• Unlocks school doors and turn lights on
• plumbing, electrical, carpentry and mechanical repairs
• Performs miscellaneous repairs such as heating malfunctions, chiller breakdowns,
• Inspects asbestos insulation, fire proofing and acoustical products within the school
• Repairs heating circulation pumps
• Flushes and refills chlorine injector tank for drinking water
• Cleans and repair air exchanger
• Cleans and repair heating force flows at all entrances
• Repairs desks and workstations
• Repairs or replaces natural gas valves
• Inspects and cleans drains in science labs
• Inspects and repairs condenser valve
• Cleans and/or replaces condenser water screen
• Performs licenced skills in a productive and safe manner with emphasis on
• code requirements
