Community Science Intern

The Community Science Intern will gain experience in community science and water quality advocacy at an internationally recognized environmental non-profit. This is an exciting opportunity for an emerging environmental scientist seeking experience in data-based advocacy.

We seek independent and motivated students with a commitment to environmental protection and an ability to handle laboratory analysis, data management, and volunteer coordination. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and organized work habits are a must.

Training:
The intern should expect training and onboarding the first week of the internship followed by ongoing mentorship and supervision from the Community Science Program Coordinator and Senior Community Science Program Manager. The intern will receive training and relevant written materials to become well-versed about Riverkeeper's Community Science Program.

Commitment:
Late April-November 2022, 8-12 hours per week, including the following dates:

May 3rd & 4th
May 10th & 11th
June 7th & 8th
June 14th & 15th
July 12th & 13th
July 19th & 20th
August 2nd & 3rd
August 9th & 10th
September 6th & 7th
September 13th & 14th
October 4th & 5th
October 18th & 19th

Location:

Kingston, NY, at Riverkeeper's office at the Hudson River Maritime Museum Compensation: $4,000 stipend

Internship Duties:

With Community Science Coordinator, prepare laboratory and ensure that volunteers are equipped for sampling events in tributaries throughout the Hudson River Watershed
Process water samples from the Catskill, Esopus, Rondout and Wallkill watersheds using the IDEXX Enterolert system for bacterial quantification
Complete data entry for routine monitoring
Special projects, as time and interest allow

Qualifications:

College-level coursework in biology and chemistry
Extreme attention to detail
Interest in Riverkeeper's water quality advocacy work
Excellent problem solving and communication skills
