Strategies and technologies to enhance habitat restoration of degraded rangelands

We are seeking a highly motivated M.S. or Ph.D. student to work on an exciting project at the intersection of restoration ecology, geospatial data science and ecological modeling. The graduate student selected will conduct research on habitat restoration of degraded rangelands (e.g., energy extraction, woody plant encroachment, and rangeland conversion). Project goals include using native species restoration, prescribed fire, and adaptive grazing to reduce the risks and impacts of drought and invasive plant species, as well as to address issues related to woody encroachment to enhance wildlife habitat in Texas.

The successful candidate will pursue an M.S. or Ph.D. (depending on qualifications) degree in Range and Wildlife Management (M.S.) or Wildlife and Rangeland Sciences (Ph.D.) with the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute, Department of Rangeland and Wildlife Sciences, Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Additional duties include publication of research results; presentations at professional conferences; assisting with other projects and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

B.S. (for M.S. position) or M.S. (for Ph.D.) in rangeland science, plant ecology, botany, environmental science, geography or closely related field.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Strong quantitative and problem-solving skills.

Strong work ethic, ability to work independently and as a productive member of a research team.

Ability to work under adverse field conditions (hot humid environment).

Preferred Qualifications

Background in plant identification, and experience basic field ecology and surveying vegetation.

Experience with geospatial technologies such as GPS and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Familiarity with geospatial data (climate, vegetation, soil), remote sensing data products.

A strong interest in ecological modeling and data science.

Ability and willingness to drive vehicle and lead field survey in difficult terrain/weather.

$2,000/month for M.S., $2,500/month for Ph.D., plus benefits (medical package available after completion of waiting period). Nonresident tuition is waived (resident tuition and fees apply). Partial resident tuition fee assistance may be provided based on availability of funds.

January, 2027 or earliest time thereafter.
