Overview

The Day Camp Counselor is responsible for supervising, engaging, and ensuring the safety of children participating in summer day camp programs. Day Camp Counselors coordinate with Day Camp Directors and fellow staff to plan and lead recreational activities for camp attendees. This position reports directly to the Day Camp Director and Program Supervisor.

Responsibilities
  • Organize and lead small and large group activities each week, such as arts, crafts, games, etc., while enforcing camp safety rules.
  • Identify and respond to camper behavior issues in a professional manner, including communicating with parents, fellow staff, Day Camp Directors, and Program Supervisor.
  • Ensure that all visiting sites are kept clean, organized, and free of litter during and after completion of activities.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records, including incident reports and daily attendance.
  • Know and understand all emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
  • Know, enforce, and apply safety guidelines with all program areas. This includes, but is not limited to, being responsible for campers’ safety and the safety of the staff and facilities.
  • Perform related tasks as required.
  • Work is primarily outdoors, with some indoor activities; transportation to camp destinations may occur via department vehicles. Exposure to varying weather conditions.
Qualifications
  • Some knowledge of a variety of athletic activities; knowledge of arts and crafts or ability to implement with instructions; experience with children ages 5-12.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and to accomplish tasks with limited direct supervision.
  • Ability to interact with campers, families, and the public from diverse communities.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work during the summer camp season (starts June 1 and ends July 31; approx. 8 weeks and 4 days).
  • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age.

Note: This is a temporary/seasonal position limited to less than 1,000 hours per calendar year.

Physical and Other Requirements
  • Requires occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force. Regularly requires standing and walking for extended periods; using arms and hands to feel/handle, climb, balance, stoop, reach, push, pull, and lift; may include kneeling, crawling, or other movements.
  • Depth perception, color perception, and peripheral vision may be required for safety and activity setup.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging information by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to monitor safety and interact with others.

This role is primarily outdoor but includes some indoor activities and transportation to camp destinations via department vehicles.
