Water Exercise Instructor (KCC)

General Definition of Work

Position is responsible for planning and leading/teaching participants in water exercise programs. Reports to Assistant Facility Director.

The incumbent will plan water exercise programs at the Kinston Community Center as well as teach/lead participants in all water programs.

• Plans, implements and directs advanced program(s) or class(‘s) for participants
• Instructs participants for entire duration of class, including set-up and clean-up of area of instruction.
• Records class attendance at the beginning of each class session. Records any incident or accident on the appropriate form(s), submitted in a timely fashion.
• Maintains enthusiasm and tact in all contact with the public, program participants, participants' parents and other staff.
• When appropriate, provides information and feedback to participants.
• Sets up and cleans up materials and equipment for each class, overseeing any clean up done by class participants
• Carries out job duties in a safe manner in accordance with all City, department and regulatory policies; follows safety procedures. Identifies unsafe situations and work hazards, corrects them if possible, and reports them to supervisor
• Distributes and collects program evaluations at the end of class sessions
• Performs other duties as assigned

Plan, organize classes, programs, events for specific age groups/populations;
Teach a group of individuals in a variety of teaching styles; such as visually as well as verbally and to individualize teaching to the needs of each student;
Understand and follow written and oral instructions;
Work with particular age or population;
Principles, techniques, and materials associated with advanced teaching in a particular program for people of a particular age or ability level;
Current techniques, equipment and materials associated with the subject matter to be taught;
The appropriate rules, techniques and equipment for the subject matter at hand, including ability to problem solve, for situations associated with class or activity.

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently standing, walking and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting;

work requires depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. recreation center; pool area; visitor center; day trip facilities).

This position is seasonal and/or permanent part-time and subject to the maximum 1,000 hour rule per calendar year.

Current CPR/First Aid required and Water Exercise Instructor certification preferred.
