Summary- The Registered Nurse (RN) operates as a key member of the health care team using the nursing process, clinical skills and leadership to direct, provide and evaluate age/population specific patient care according to the department’s scope of service. Analyze patient health problems and needs, develop and implement nursing care plans, and maintain medical records.
- Monitor, record, and report symptoms and changes in patients’ condition
- Collect patient data
- Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests to assist in determining plan of care
- Identify expected outcomes
- Implement and modify interventions identified in the patient plan of care
- Evaluate the patient’s progress towards outcomes and modify patient treatment plans as indicated by patient response and condition
- Prepare patients for, and assist with, examinations and treatments
- Accurately prepare and administer medications according to policies and procedures
- Document nursing process in assessment, care plan (NCP), and nurse notes as outlined in policy and procedure. Diagnosis is valid for patient, interventions are appropriate and outcomes evaluated. Changes in the plan of care are made as the patient progresses.
- Systematically evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice
- Identify practices to improve job or department performance
- Monitor job and department activities
- Participate in department CQI by:
- Using the results to initiate changes in practice
- Using the results to initiate system changes
- Acquire and maintain current knowledge in nursing practice:
- Participate in ongoing educational activities
- Seek experiences to maintain skills
- Seek knowledge; display skills appropriate to setting
- Consistently seek educational tools to broaden knowledge base of various age groups, diseases, and best practices
- Complete mandatory training each year, plus additional 16 minimal hours for staff development
- Remain up-to-date on new equipment, policies, and procedures
- Contribute to the professional development of peers, colleagues and others
- Share knowledge with colleagues and others
- Provide constructive feedback
- Direct and supervise less skilled nursing or health care personnel; may act as a charge nurse of a particular unit, and may work as a preceptor after attending preceptor workshop
- Adhere to unit specific standards of patient interaction and customer service
- Make decisions and take actions on behalf of patients in an ethical manner
- Maintain confidentiality. Act as a patient advocate. Deliver care in a non-judgmental and non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to patient diversity.
- Collaborate with patient, significant others and healthcare providers in providing care
- Consult and coordinate with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans
- Make referrals for continuity of care
- Educate patients, families and other groups on topics such as health education, disease prevention, and health improvement programs
- Use research findings in practice
- Use interventions substantiated by research
- Participate in research as appropriate to nurse’s position
- Implement findings from departmental and performance improvement activities into daily tasks
- Consider factors related to safety, effectiveness and cost in planning and delivering patient care
- Evaluate factors related to safety, effectiveness and cost when two or more practice options would result in the same outcomes
- Assist patient in identifying and securing appropriate services available to address health related needs
- Adhere to standard precautions:
- Demonstrate awareness of appropriate safety precautions in the environment for patients and significant others. Access resources to get necessary services to continue care post discharge
- Adhere to personal protective equipment requirements. Utilize appropriate Safe Patient-Handling equipment, where indicated, to ensure personal and patient safety.

- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing
