SummaryThe Wound Skin Care Nurse who sub‑specializes in wound and continence of care is responsible for the treatment and management of disorders affecting the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and integumentary systems. The scope of care typically involves treatment of ostomies, stomas, acute and chronic wounds, and urinary and fecal incontinence. Wound, ostomy, and continence nurses provide a multidisciplinary approach to treatment across a continuum of care.
Responsibilities- Respond to patients, physicians, peers, clinical staff, and other departments in a friendly, helpful, and courteous manner.
- Conduct interpersonal relationships to project a positive image of the department and hospital.
- Ensure contacts with other health care members are friendly, helpful, and courteous.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN preferred. BSN within three years of employment required.
- Two years of relevant RN experience. Experience with wound continence care preferred.
- Current licensure to practice as a registered nurse in the state of North Carolina.
- BLS certification required.
- Specialty certification by Association of Wound Treatment Association within one year of employment.
- Demonstrate initiative, teamwork, and flexibility.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- Excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize and coordinate patient care activities.
- Effective interpersonal, communication, and observation skills.
- Understanding of patient care needs across developmental stages for various age groups.
- High level skills in critical thinking and assessment related to vascular access device selection and placement (preferred).
Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, airborne pathogens, and other infectious diseases requiring protective equipment. Possible exposure to other hazards such as electrical, radiation, toxic waste, chemical hazards based on the department. Possible exposure to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation. Continuous use of medical and clinical equipment such as IV pumps, monitors, ventilators, oxygen tanks, and patient beds.
Physical RequirementsStanding, sitting, walking, and working throughout the shift. Lifting, pulling, turning, and pushing patients daily. Ability to use appropriate safe patient handling equipment. Visual, auditory, and verbal skills necessary. Stressful work periods and rotating shifts.
