Summary:

The Registered Nurse (RN) operates as a key member of the health care team using the nursing process, clinical skills and leadership to direct, provide and evaluate age/population specific patient care according to the department's scope of service. Analyze patient health problems and needs, develop and implement nursing care plans, and maintain medical records.

The Nursery Registered Nurse (RN) at UNC HEALTH Lenoir will operate as a key member of the health care team while providing evidence based, quality patient care to newborns. The Nursery RN must utilize the nursing process: assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating while caring for newborn infants. The Nursery RN is responsible for the medical, educational, and psychological care of the newborn from time of delivery until discharge.

The Nursery RN will provide family-centered education to mothers and caregivers as it relates to routine newborn care, breastfeeding, and infant safety. Evaluate mother/caregiver's understanding to education and report findings to providers. Refer high-risk newborns for high-risk tracking, provide breastfeeding assistance to breastfeeding mothers, and maintain a safe rooming-in environment. Assist provider in the care of sick newborns to include but not limited to: IV/UVC insertion, monitoring/treating blood glucose levels, administration of bedside CPAP, drawing neonatal labs and interpreting lab values, initiating/maintaining bilirubin light therapy, providing neonatal resuscitation, etc.

Assist provider in stabilizing newborns for transport to higher care level facilities (Level II, III, IV). Develop and implement nursing care plans, communicate and interact professionally with providers, staff, patients and families. Maintain electronic medical records. Provide nursing services to infants and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

Responsibilities:

The ill, injured, convalescent, or disabled patients are key customers. Patients, families and the other members of the healthcare team, as key customers, are provided with cost efficient care with excellent clinical outcomes, provided by a team member who understands and respects each member of the multidiscipline team and interacts with other team members and customers in a friendly, helpful and courteous manner.

The Family Birth Center provides care for gynecological, obstetrical and newborn patient populations. The unit is supported by a variety of resource persons and staff consisting of: registered nurses who specialize in women's services and newborn care, nursing assistants, secretaries, clinical coordinators, and a unit director. Providers from Kinston Community Health Center, Lenoir County Health Department and UNC Women's Health at Lenoir provide patient care for the gynecological and obstetrical patient populations.

Providers from Kinston Pediatrics, Lenoir Family Medicine and Hope Physicians provide care for the newborn patient population. The focus of care is family-centered with well infants rooming in, providing maximum bonding opportunities and learning experiences for every patient.
