Job Summary
Get outdoors, Be a mentor, and Get paid! Teen Day Camp Director's play a vital role in promoting physical activity, social interaction, and overall well-being within their community. You will be leading a group of teens and Teen Day Camp Leaders throughout several outdoor adventures in and around the local region. The experiences you will be able to add to your resume, after one summer, are below, but not limited to:
Primary Responsibilities:
- Youth Engagement:
Create & facilitate recreational programs and activities to the interests and preferences of teenagers to keep them engaged. - Mentorship:
Serve as a positive role model and mentor, providing guidance and support for teenagers as they develop life skills and social abilities. - Conflict Resolution:
Be prepared to handle conflicts and disagreements among teenagers, promoting effective communication and conflict resolution techniques. - DEIB focused:
Integrate DEIB values (diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging) into all aspects of Teen Programs - Cultural
Competency:
Understand of the experiences and community issues affecting those marginalized in mainstream outdoor opportunities, such as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), and/or LGBTQIA+ communities and demonstrate the ability to work with people of diverse races, ages, genders, abilities, and economic backgrounds - Youth Development:
Create & facilitate activities that foster personal growth, leadership skills, and self-esteem among teenagers. - Safety
Education:
Educate teenagers about the importance of safety in recreational activities, including the use of protective gear and adherence to rules. - Open Communication:
Encourage open and honest communication to build trust and rapport with teenagers, allowing them to express their thoughts and concerns. - Supervision:
Supervise and mentor 2-3 Teen Day Camp Leaders and 8-12 teens. - Providing and maintaining boundaries:
Maintain a balance between providing autonomy and ensuring the safety and well-being of youth. - Collaboration:
Collaborate with the team, to enhance teenagers' recreational experiences and expand opportunities. - Evaluation and Feedback:
Regularly assess the effectiveness of programs and gather feedback from teenagers to make improvements.
Skills and Abilities
Demonstrates sports, games and craft activities to staff and participants. Accompany children on walks and public transit to outings. Administer First Aid/CPR if needed. Monitor participants by watching and listening. Shop for and deliver supplies to program sites.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
- Must be 21 years of age, or older
- Must have at least 5 years of driving experience and are willing to get certified to drive a 14-passenger minibus (Training will be provided upon hire.)
- At least two years of experience working with teens and/or youth
- Minimum one-year supervisory experience
- Previous experience in outdoor settings
- Knowledge of general hiking etiquette, Leave No Trace, and traversing the outdoors safely
- Must successfully complete a thorough background check as required by the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act
- The background check must include a Motor Vehicle Report (also called a Driving Abstract).
In place of the above requirements, the incumbent may possess any combination of relevant education and experience which would demonstrate the individual's knowledge, skill, and ability to proficiently perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above.
OtherHours of Work
7-8 hours per day between 9am - 5pm. Every Monday - Friday between, June 29th - August 28th. Work schedule may fluctuate during periods of low attendance and poor weather days.
During the 9 weeks of summer adventures, attendance is extremely necessary for all staff positions. Staff are seasonal positions that support a mandatory staff to camper ratio. There is very little opportunity for scheduled days off throughout the summer.
Working Conditions & Physical Activities
- Performs work in indoor and outdoor settings including multipurpose rooms, parks, playgrounds, beaches, trails, and recreation sites.

- Exposure to extended periods of direct sunlight and/or cool and damp weather is possible. Exposure to insects and wildlife is possible when out on a trail in our region. Staff will receive training and other preventive measures upon hire.
- The job requires frequent light lifting and carrying (Backpack 15-20 lbs.) up to eight miles, and infrequent heavy lifting of up to 50lbs.
