  • First Aid and CPR.
  • Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission - Corrections Officer Certification (within 12 months of employment)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Performs all activities in the receipt, booking, custody, transport and care of inmates in accordance with established policies and procedures. Assures the fair and reasonable treatment of inmates and the maintenance and operation of a safe, secure and sanitary corrections facility, placing a primary concern for the health, welfare, safety, and security of inmates, staff, and visitors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties are essential for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To be successful in this position, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned.

  • Receives and processes new inmates. Searches inmates; collects, records and maintains inmates' personal articles; reviews commitment orders, books, fingerprints, photographs and places inmates in cells.
  • Inputs and updates computer and manual files to complete incident, general, arrest, inmate and statistical reports to ensure legal requirements are met.
  • Responds to emergencies within the facility. Takes prompt and effective action to maintain safety and security; uses force when necessary and consistent with relevant laws and policies.
  • Escorts or assures custody of inmates in transit to court appearances, hospital or other medical facilities, or other correctional institutions.
  • Coordinates inmate control and distribution of necessary documents in the courtroom; calculates credit time for court sentencing as requested; verifies and updates court-related information on computer, such as final disposition, sentencing, and release dates.
  • Monitors electronic surveillance equipment and observes inmate, trustee, and visitor movement, programs, and activities within facility to control over-all security of and access to the facility.
  • Performs searches of inmates and facility for contraband.
  • Inspects jail facilities for security and cleanliness to assure facilities are maintained in accordance with established procedures.
  • Arranges for the release of inmates in accordance with established procedures.
  • Prepares and submits written reports concerning inmate population and jail functions in accordance with established procedures.
  • Provides security for contractors in the facility to facilitate the provision of medical, mental health, and other services.
  • Responds to inquiries, complaints or requests for information regarding area of assignment from inmates, other staff and the general public, providing information within scope of knowledge and authority, or refers to appropriate individual.
  • Maintains proficiency in the use of related equipment.
  • May assist in the training of new officers.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and techniques of modern inmate care, custody and control and related aspects of law enforcement.
  • Computer software consistent for this position.

Skill in:

  • Applying problem solving, logic and reasoning to determine solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • The use of relevant equipment, vehicles, and firearms.

Ability to:

  • Acquire skill in the use and care of firearms and the conditions under which they may be employed in accordance with department regulations.
  • Physically handle and control inmates.
  • Hold self in readiness at all times to effectively respond to abnormal jail conditions and situations.
  • Perform duties and maintain personal conduct, attitude and appearance that conform to strict policies, procedures, and discipline.
  • Analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action, particularly under psychologically and emotionally stressful conditions.
  • Administer first aid.
  • Read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and concise records and reports.
  • Interpret and implement local policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence;
    Federal, State, and local regulations.
  • Use appropriate language, style and methods depending on audience and the purpose of communication.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.
  • Work the allocated hours of the position, including overtime as required, and respond after hours if needed.
