Position: On-Call Facilities Services Technician I

Job Summary

Note: This is an On‑Call position that is not eligible for benefits. Being an on‑call employee means that your work schedule is not guaranteed, hours worked could range from 0 - 40 hours a week, depending on office needs. All hours worked are subject to Department of Retirement Services and Affordable Care Act reporting requirements. More information will be shared during the interview, and we encourage questions about the program.

The On‑Call Facilities Services Technician I is responsible for performing maintenance and repairs on City buildings. This position is responsible for a variety of skilled and semi‑skilled tasks in one or more of the following trades: carpentry, plumbing, painting, mechanical, lock repair, furniture repair and moving. Responds to routine and non‑routine maintenance requests generated by Facilities Work Orders. This position must be reasonably willing and able to respond to off‑hours emergency situations affecting the safety of City buildings.

Distinguishing Characteristics: The Facilities Services Technician I is the entry‑level position in the job series.

Essential Functions

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Operate vehicles, equipment and a variety of hand and small power tools as required to complete building repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Inventory and order supplies needed to perform work.
  • Perform mechanical maintenance or plumbing repairs.
  • Maintain building light fixtures including daily replacement of bulbs and repair of ballasts.
  • Perform adjustments and emergency repairs to plumbing equipment including cleaning plugged pipes, draining pipes, replacing washers, faucets and floats, cleaning gutters and grease traps.
  • Install, maintain and repair building structures including partitions, doors, cabinets, windows, electrical switches and fixtures.
  • Install, troubleshoot and repair electrical fixtures, switches, receptacles, fans and other electrical equipment.
  • Prepare surfaces for painting and apply paint to match or cover walls, ceilings, furniture cabinets and other interior and exterior surfaces including touch‑up painting.
  • Maintain records related to work performed including materials used, work orders and preventative maintenance completed.
  • Assist in labor and materials estimates for projects; purchase supplies and materials as needed according to established procedures.
  • Perform light janitorial duties as needed for emergencies or as assigned.

  • Perform functions as assigned in the City's emergency response plan in the event of an emergency.

  • Ability to use a wide variety of hand tools and to operate equipment necessary to perform a variety of tasks.

  • Ability to deal effectively with facility users, Facilities Lead, and managers.
  • Ability to organize and lay out work at the job site.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to maintain records and perform simple mathematical calculations.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education:

    High School or trade school diploma or GED.
  • Experience:

    2 years' experience in maintenance.
  • Or:
    In place of the above requirements, the incumbent may possess any combination of relevant education and experience which would demonstrate the individual's knowledge, skill, and ability to proficiently perform the essential duties and…
