Google Cloud's software engineers develop next‑generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information. We’re looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas including information retrieval, distributed computing, large‑scale system design, networking, data storage, security, AI, NLP, UI design and mobile. As a software engineer you will work on a specific project critical to Google Cloud’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as the business grows.

You will anticipate customer needs, act like an owner, take action and innovate. This role focuses on optimizing Big Query for small queries, where many queries operate on small datasets. We aim to make Big Query the best solution for those workloads and expect you to build optimizations that cut overhead and boost performance by up to 50% on benchmark workloads.

• Improve Big Query engine to remove bottlenecks for low latency queries and design solutions that are easy to maintain and extend.
• Conduct tests and monitor the system to ensure quality.
• Collaborate efficiently with other Big Query teams to reduce overhead and remove bottlenecks.
• Develop within the Big Query and Dremel codebase, primarily C++ with some Java in the data plane and Python for tests.
• Elevate engineering excellence across the stack.

• Bachelor’s degree in Electronics or Computer Engineering with an emphasis on computer architecture and performance analysis, or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience designing and developing relational and distributed databases, database internals, transactional systems, query processing, and query optimization.

• Experience architecting and developing software or infrastructure for scalable, high‑performance, distributed systems.
• Experience with distributed, columnar or analytic‑oriented databases or distributed data processing frameworks.
• Deep understanding of multithreading, concurrency, and asynchronous programming.

US: $207,000 – $301,000 (USD) + 20% bonus target + equity + benefits

Individual pay is determined by factors including job‑related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
