Position: Director of Nursing (Corrections)

General Description Of Duties

Under the administrative direction of the Assistant Healthcare Administrator, manages and coordinates nursing, inmate patient care and associated operational services within a Correctional Facility. Assists in formulating clinical and patient care policies, protocol and procedures, education and training material, and participates in strategic decision making for the operation. Directs, coordinates and oversees the administration of all associated nursing and support staff.

Position provides for twenty‑four hour on‑call administrative services to the Corrections Facility.

  • Monitors and manages all nursing services to include associated administrative operations and activities.
  • Establishes, maintains and reviews patient care protocols and standards to ensure compliance with departmental goals and all federal and state regulations and guidelines; ensures all nursing functions are in compliance with all applicable national and state health care standards for Correctional Facilities.
  • Participates in the Continuous Quality Improvement Program.
  • Assists in the development of short‑ and long‑term plans and follows through to ensure the plan and goals are met; gathers, interprets, and prepares data for various reports and makes recommendations; evaluates work procedures, schedules, and workflow.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, monitoring, and annual review of nursing protocols.
  • Creates, establishes and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the department goals and objectives, recruits, employs, trains, supervises and evaluates professional and contract staff.
  • Participates in environmental inspection of the entire Correctional Facility to ensure a safe and sanitary environment.
  • Manages and maintains a variety of critical record keeping and statistical reporting; ensures confidentiality and security of health records and medical information; retains copies on file.
  • Assists in establishing training material and presents in‑service educational programs.
  • Maintains effective communications with all health services providers regarding activities affecting the delivery of health care services that are accurate, complete and timely.
  • Identifies and resolves problems. Interviews inmates as required regarding disputes and grievances concerning health care services. Reviews complaints and inquiries regarding inmate treatment.
  • Monitors healthcare requests, as well as non‑emergency clinics to ensure compliance with corresponding rules and procedures.
  • Represents the Facility externally and internally on committees and at meetings as required.
  • Performs duties as assigned or necessary which are related, or logically assigned to the position.
Education/Experience

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing; supplemented by five (5) years of experience within correctional medicine or a similar high‑paced environment.
  • Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Florida.
  • Current hands‑on CPR certification from American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI).
Preferred
  • Certified Correctional Health Professional.

Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to effectively monitor activities of nursing staff comprised of supervisory and health care professional employees to ensure compliance in carrying out departmental functions.
  • Extensive knowledge of all applicable medical treatments and common medications administered within a corrections facility.
