General Description of Duties
Renders general and specialized nursing care to inmate patients in a Correctional Facility. Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with approved nursing techniques to promote the physical and mental health of the inmate population. Ensures functions under charge are performed in compliance with all federal, state, and local rules, policies, and other regulatory standards applicable to the work.
Essential Job Functions- Performs nursing services, such as obtaining vital signs, wound care, IV therapy, collecting blood, urine, sputum, and stool specimens, responding to emergencies in the Facility, and performing assessments to insure needs are met in accordance with clinical guidelines and duties imposed by state and federal laws and regulations and OCCD administrative procedures.
- Provides first aid for injuries and acute illness; reports any health‑related issues and/or concerns.
- Initiates prompt referral to the appropriate medical facility when more extensive treatment is warranted.
- Administers and documents all medications as directed by medication records.
- Orders medications and supplies from the pharmacy and suppliers.
- Reads, maintains, updates, and files various medical logs, databases, and records; compiles data from patient medical records, e.g., illness/injury logs, medication administration, physical exams, treatments, specimens collected and sent for processing.
- Verifies all orders from the medical records were properly transposed to the orders/tasks within the electronic medical record and medication administration record. Maintains electronic medical record files on all inmates. Files all necessary medical reports in the patient’s medical record.
- Performs duties as assigned/necessary which are related or logical in assignment to the position.
Education:
Associates Degree in Nursing or related field from an accredited college or university.
- Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Florida.
- Must possess and maintain hands‑on, in‑person (classroom) CPR certification from the American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI). Online only or e‑Learning CPR certification will not be considered.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of all applicable medical treatments and common medications administered within a corrections facility.
- Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, and local rules, regulations, ordinances, and other regulatory standards applicable to the work.
- Ability to access, operate and maintain various software applications; ability to read, update and maintain various records and files.
- Ability to operate basic office equipment, e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines.
- Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion.
- Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic; ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inmates, health and corrections professionals.
- Ability to deal tactfully and cordially with a variety of people from different cultural backgrounds; ability to deal with people in a variety of changing and complex situations.
- Ability to work under stressful conditions.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, or climb stairs for extended periods of time.
- Medium physical demand.
- 50 pounds maximum lifting.
- Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 25 lbs.
- Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear.
- Good eyesight for production or safety of self and others.
