Starting Salary: $23.17 per hour until the candidate passes the state exam.
After Passing State Exam: $26.28 per hour.

General Description of DutiesPosition is under the direct supervision of Certified Correctional Staff. The purpose is to direct, supervise, and monitor inmates housed in the Osceola Correctional facility in accordance with departmental policies and regulatory requirements. Employees in this classification perform at a journey professional level and are responsible for the custody, control, and care of inmates within the detention facility and while transporting inmates to and from the facility.
The objective is to support safe, efficient, and effective facility operations.
Criminal Justice Basic Ability Test (CJBAT) Requirement

Correctional Academy Physical Assessment Test (PAT) Requirement
Selected candidates will be sponsored to attend Valencia College’s School of Public Safety located at 8600 Valencia College Lane, Orlando, FL 32825. To qualify for the sponsorship program, you must pass the PAT.
Minimum requirements:
- Complete a 1.5‑mile run in under 18 minutes
- Perform at least 25 sit‑ups in one minute
- Perform at least 15 standard push‑ups in one minute (no modified versions)
Additionally, candidates must attend a Valencia College Criminal Justice Institute Informational Session.
NOTE TO INTERNAL APPLICANTS: Internal candidates in the same classification and/or paygrade as the position posted will not receive a pay adjustment if selected.
Minimum Qualifications for Corrections Officer Cadet Academy- Must be at least 18 years old and a United States Citizen.
- Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license (CDL with passenger endorsement required before transporting inmates).
- Must be able to complete and pass CPR and First Aid certifications.
- Must not have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement.
- Must be able to pass the CJBAT, PAT, extensive background check, polygraph, psychological exam, and comprehensive physical exam.
- Must attend and complete the Corrections Officer Academy.
- Must be able to work all shifts and overtime once becoming a certified Corrections Officer.
- Provide highly responsible care, custody, and control of criminal offenders in a detention/correctional institution; observe, interact, and supervise inmate activities on assigned post to enforce order and discipline; monitor inmate housing, job, and program assignments. Observe for nudity and possible lewd acts.
- Perform all work in compliance with laws, rules, and regulatory standards governing the operations of the detention facility and programs, and the confinement, safety, health, and protection of criminal offenders.
- Perform scheduled and unscheduled rounds and inspections of assigned areas to ensure security, safety, and sanitation; search inmates and cells for contraband; report observations to superiors.
- Perform critical inmate classification, count, and control while maintaining fire safety, key control, and perimeter security.
- Bears assigned firearm and hand weapons; follows prescribed procedures to safeguard all Corrections staff, property, and facilities; screens inmate visitors.
- Supervise, communicate, and promote positive behavior among inmates; resolve behavioral problems through counseling and problem‑solving skills.
- Employ force to maintain order as prescribed by departmental rules and regulations when necessary; escort and secure inmates within the facility.
- Transport inmates to and from various locations such as correctional facilities, courtrooms, prisons, medical facilities, and work programs.
