General Description Of Duties

Under general supervision, the purpose of the job is to perform manual work in the operation of light equipment associated with preparation and installation of pavement markings. This position operates various equipment in the fabrication and placement of roadway signs. This position also operates aerial lift equipment and diagnostic tools to perform light duties pertaining to traffic signal, or electronic traffic control device maintenance, repairs, and installation.

Purpose of this work is to support safe, orderly and regulatory compliant traffic operations on the County's transportation infrastructure. Employees in this position are in an emergency response classification and may require after hour work and on-call duties.

Responsibilities
  • Operate hand line and long line thermoplastic striping machines; operate a fork truck to transport pavement marking and sign materials; ensure safe and proper operation of tools, vehicles and equipment; adheres to safety preparation and application standards.
  • Assist in layout of pavement markings of new road construction, striping of longitudinal lines and intersection markings to include school legends, railroad crossings, stop bars, crosswalks, and other pavement markings.
  • Operate a variety of hand held equipment, machinery and vehicles in the installation of pavement makings, e.g., hand liner, grinder, blower, trimmer, torches, die cutters, air compressors, thermoplastic kettles, long liner, RPM and crash cushion truck.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory of materials including, but not necessarily limited to thermoplastic, beads, stencils, markers, or signs.
  • Maintain equipment used for pavement marking installation; perform preventive maintenance on all tools and equipment; clean and maintain tools, machinery and equipment.
  • Assist or install traffic control signs in accordance with County policies and procedures.
  • Assist the Sign Graphic Specialist with daily activities; fabricate street signs; operate computer and related software to prepare sign layouts; laminates sheeting to aluminum blanks, fabricates screens, and screen printing.
  • Assist in the installation and maintenance of various traffic signal equipment.
  • Ensure the safe and proper operation of trades tools and power equipment; adhere to prescribed safety standards and regulatory requirements; ensure all work produced adheres to prescribed standards of the Manual Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Perform duties as assigned/necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED;

Experience: Related experience in pavement markings, sign fabrication, or sign installation experience, traffic signal or low voltage electrical systems; or demonstrated ability to learn the technical aspects of the work.

Required Licensure/Certification

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's Permit or within ninety (90) days of hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License within (6 months of hire)
  • Must possess and maintain a valid FDOT MOT (Maintenance of Traffic) certification or obtain within ninety (90) days of hire.
Knowledge,

Skills And Abilities
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to read and interpret various documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and related documentation.
  • Knowledge of the safe and proper use and care of manual, electrical, gas and hydraulic powered tools and equipment used in the application of pavement markings.
  • Knowledge of the proper placement of barricades and signage for road and lane closures needed for the protection of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Skill in the operation of various manual, gas and hydraulic powered trade tools and light equipment for sign maintenance and installation.
  • Ability to climb, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, sit and stand for extended periods of time; including the ability to work at heights up to 60 feet.
  • Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion.
  • Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with co-workers, department management and the general public.
Physical Demand Requirements

Physical Demand: Heavy

  • 100 pounds maximum lifting.
  • Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear.
  • Good eyesight for production or safety of self and others.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, and climb for extended periods of time.
  • Physical demand requirements are in excess of medium work.
