Position Overview
Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to lead and perform general maintenance, grounds keeping, and custodial work in the assigned functional area. Employees in this classification operate at a senior level and are responsible for completing a daily routine of general and preventative facilities maintenance and repair tasks to provide employees and the general public with an environmentally safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient public building, roadway, and grounds environment.
The employee’s role differs from that of entry‑level positions by the knowledge and proficiency gained through training and experience across a variety of semi‑skilled trades.
- Leads and performs custodial tasks, such as emptying and cleaning waste receptacles; washing windows; dusting and polishing furniture; cleaning vents, air filters, fans, walls; and changing light bulbs.
- Leads and performs a variety of grounds maintenance tasks, including edging, mowing, trimming, waste and litter removal, fertilizing, placing sod, raking, planting, and may utilize herbicides or pesticides.
- Leads and performs minor maintenance and repairs on facilities, structures, equipment, sidewalks, drainage and other County property in one or more skilled and semi‑skilled disciplines, such as plumbing, masonry, carpentry, flooring, irrigation, and electric.
- Operates light vehicles and equipment for installation, maintenance, and repair functions in the assigned area; may operate items such as flatbed, compactor, back‑hoe, loader, chopper, pile driver, dozer, dragline, forklift, grader, roller, and trenchers.
- May utilize a wide variety of manual, gas, and electric‑powered hand tools, including hammer, shovel, rake, screwdrivers, wrenches, digging bar, chainsaw, chemical sprayer, leaf blower, weed eater, hedge trimmer, and edger.
- Performs labor‑intensive work that may expose the employee to extreme heat or cold, fumes, and chemicals.
- Maintains tools, equipment, and machinery through lubricating, servicing, fueling, routine light maintenance, and repairs.
- Participates in work‑site safety setup, such as preparing work areas, setting barricades and cones, conducting traffic control in accordance with uniform work‑zone safety standards, and flagging traffic.
- Attends safety meetings and/or participates in safety inspections.
- May supervise daily activities of maintenance personnel.
- Assists in setting up and removing tables, chairs, stages, etc. for daily meetings and classes.
- Responds to emergency situations to confine, resolve, or prevent hazardous conditions, such as fallen debris, spills, broken windows, and broken locks.
- Performs other duties as assigned or necessary that are related to or logical for the position.
High School Diploma or GED.
ExperienceOne (1) year of general trades maintenance work and demonstrated ability to fulfill the physical requirements of the work and grounds keeping; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Additional Licensing Requirements- Road & Bridge Department:
Must possess and maintain a Class A (CDL) Commercial Driver’s License. - Mowing Department:
Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within six (6) months of employment. - Building Maintenance:
Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to interpret and communicate a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to lead and carry out assignments with minimal instructions.
- Ability to adhere to prescribed routines and practices.
- Considerable knowledge of, and ability to utilize materials, methods and equipment used in sports field care and general grounds and facility maintenance work.
- Ability to operate various vehicles, trucks, light construction equipment and machinery, and other gasoline and diesel‑driven motors.
- Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic and team approach.
- Physical capability to climb, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, sit, and stand for extended periods; lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work at heights up to 12 feet.
- Ability to work in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees for extended periods.
- Ability to withstand exposure to dust, mold, fiberglass, and various chemicals.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with department management, County employees, and the general public.
Physical demand:
Heavy.
- Maximum lifting of 100 lbs.
- Frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs up to 66% of the work time.
- Requires normal hearing to perceive spoken instructions or sounds in the environment.
- Requires normal vision for productive work and safety.
- Overall physical demands exceed those of a medium‑level position.
