Job Summary

Supervisor Nuclear Engineer (Operations Deputy Division Head) – Nuclear Refueling Engineering Division, Nuclear Engineering Department of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

• Manage, plan, and execute the overall reactor plant refueling program for a specific nuclear submarine.
• Specify refueling requirements necessary to satisfactorily perform all refueling work for which the Nuclear Engineering Department is responsible.
• Oversee preparation of detailed refueling procedures and provide engineering supervision for the performance of these procedures.

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
• Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
• New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
• Must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level if currently a federal employee (time‑in‑grade).
• Retired military members appointed within 180 days of retirement are subject to 5 U.S.C. § 3326.
• Males born after 12‑31‑59 must register for Selective Service.
• Requires obtaining and maintaining an interim and/or final security clearance prior to duty; failure to maintain clearance may result in withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
• Work is conducted in areas where hazardous physical and chemical agents are present (fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non‑ionizing radiation, chemicals); participation in medical surveillance programs is required.
• Position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites; must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods.

In addition to the basic requirements, the applicant must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS‑13 grade level.

• Experience applying knowledge of refueling operations of pressurized water reactor plants, including reactor theory.
• Experience applying administrative procedures to plan, execute, and control refueling operations performed during a refueling cycle.
• Experience preparing shipyard for the capability of refueling reactor plants for nuclear‑powered submarines.

• Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline accredited by ABET, or a program including differential and integral calculus and advanced courses in at least five of the following areas: statics and dynamics; strength of materials; fluid mechanics, hydraulics; thermodynamics; electrical fields and circuits; nature and properties of materials; and any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics.
• Alternative qualifications include a combination of education and experience that demonstrates thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underpinning engineering and a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of engineering sciences and techniques, with satisfactory evidence of professional registration, licensure, or successful completion of related coursework.
