Job Overview

MARINE MACHINERY MECHANIC SUPERVISOR I – Mechanical Shop, Production Resources Department, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The position serves as a supervisor in the mechanical shop, overseeing maintenance, preventive measures, and nuclear work permits.

• Inspect assigned work sites for preventive maintenance and recommend corrective action.
• Recommend new machines, tools, and relocation of equipment.
• Initiate nuclear work permits.
• Review work documents for adequacy and coordinate needed changes in work procedures with shop and technical codes.

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Must be eligible for federal employment.
• Must participate in direct‑deposit pay program.
• New employees must pass E‑Verify employment verification.
• Appointment of retired military members within 180 days of retirement is subject to 5 U.S.C. § 3326.
• Male applicants born after 12‑31‑59 must register for Selective Service.
• Must complete pre‑appointment physical examination, if required.
• Must obtain and maintain interim and/or final security clearance before duty entry.
• Work may be performed in areas with potential harmful physical and chemical agents; participation in medical surveillance required.
• Required to wear personal protective equipment (helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, safety shoes) continuously during the shift.
• Position may require travel to CONUS, OCONUS, remote or isolated sites; must be able to travel by military or commercial aircraft for extended periods.
• May be required to work uncommon tours, including nights, weekends, and holidays; overtime or night differential pay may apply.

Applicants should demonstrate, through experience and training, the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies required at this level. The emphasis is on quality of experience rather than length of time. The following screen‑out element is used to determine minimum eligibility:

• Ability to lead or supervise, including determining sequence, priorities and deadlines for defueling, refueling, and core loading of an assigned nuclear submarine.
• Estimating material, equipment and manpower needs.
• Developing and implementing work and safety procedures.
• Providing directions to subordinates to achieve efficient shop operations.
• Planning division of workload.
• Executing administrative functions such as scheduling and approving leave, promotions, etc.
