Job Summary
Serve as an Electronics Mechanic in the Electrical Shop, Production Resources Department of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
Duties- Install, modify, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair fiber optic communication and control circuits integral to shipboard electronic systems.
- Use a variety of electronic test equipment, including oscilloscopes, pulse and signal generators, distortion and waveform analyzers, digital data generators, digital voltmeters, frequency and pulse counters, and special test panels.
- Frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted, and occasionally up to 50 pounds with assistance or weight‑handling equipment.
- Independently determine the nature and extent of repairs required on equipment normally complicated by variable and intricate relationships.
- Repairs of complex electronic systems and equipment (copper or fiber‑based).
- Precision termination and fusion splicing of fiber optic cables.
- Optical testing using OTDRs, power meters, and related diagnostic equipment to isolate faults and verify system integrity.
- Troubleshooting systems by following signal paths through complex interconnections of components, assemblies, subassemblies, and connecting cable harnesses shown on schematics.
- Performing further tests and alignments to ensure completed equipment is aligned and functioning properly.
- Repairing one component often requires further adjustments and alignments of interrelated circuits to ensure proper function and transmission.

Requirements- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
- Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
- Must successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check (for new employees).
- Within the Department of Defense, appointment of retired military members within 180 days after retirement is subject to 18 U.S.C. § 3326.
- Males born after 12‑31‑59 must be registered for Selective Service.
- Required to successfully complete a pre‑appointment physical examination.
- Required to obtain and maintain an interim or final security clearance before duty. Failure to maintain clearance may result in withdrawal of job offer or removal.
- Required to successfully complete a pre‑employment drug test (including marijuana). Failure to report or to pass results in rescission of offer. Random testing may occur.
- Position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. Must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods.
- Work performed in areas potentially containing harmful physical or chemical agents (e.g., fumes, dust, heat, ionizing/non‑ionizing radiation, chemicals). Must participate in medical surveillance programs.
