Complex Needs Teacher

The complex needs teacher is responsible for working collaboratively with a student's team in providing educational instruction to students in a highly structured classroom environment designed to promote intellectual, emotional, and social growth. The teacher will design IEP's and deliver instruction in areas such as reading, ELA, Math, Science, and Daily Living Skills, and pre-vocational skills. They will be trained and required to understand the basic principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), STAR curriculum, implementation of picture exchange communication systems, and visual support systems.

Essential functions include adapting classroom work and providing instruction for students with significant social communication needs, advising parents and guardians of student progress, assessing student progress towards objectives, collaborating with instructional staff and other school personnel, directing assistant teachers and instructional assistants, monitoring students' behavior, participating in and coordinating various meetings, preparing written materials, reporting incidents, administering first aid, responding to emergency situations, providing an appropriate learning environment, coaching regular education teachers, complying with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, participating in multi-disciplinary team meetings, leading, training, and supervising educational support assistants, fulfilling performance standards, and fulfilling working conditions and physical effort.

Knowledge required includes current concepts, methods, and procedures for curriculum development, laws, rules, policies, and trends regarding instruction, techniques in evaluation and assessment, behavior management and communication techniques, and computer technology.

Skills and abilities

include physical attendance, adherence to drug-free workplace requirements, holding a valid first aid card, reading and understanding instructions, accurately transferring and conveying information, clear communication, and completing required special education forms.

Education and experience required include completion of coursework satisfying the requirement of issuance of a valid Oregon teaching license with appropriate endorsement, demonstrated ability to teach students to be successful learners, and special education teaching endorsement. Two years of successful teaching experience in a social communication skills, life skills, or other behavior support program is preferred, as is experience in ABA.
