Job Summary
This National Guard position is for an Industrial Hygienist, Position Description Number D1719P01, and is part of the Oregon National Guard 173rd Fighter Wing, National Guard.
Major DutiesAs an Industrial Hygienist, GS‑0690‑11, this position is located in the Medical Group at an Air National Guard Wing. The purpose of this position is to provide a professional Industrial Hygienist to plan, schedule, execute, manage, and administer the installation‑wide Industrial Hygiene/Bioenvironmental Engineering Program (IH/BEE), which includes occupational health/industrial hygiene, radiation safety, and environmental monitoring to maintain and promote the health and well‑being of military and technician personnel.
- Ensures statutory and regulatory compliance with applicable OSHA and AFOSH directives and regulations.
- Serves as the technical expert and advisor to Wing leadership on all issues pertaining to the above directives.
- Provides expert advice concerning OSHA, the EPA, NRC, and US Air Force on installation health matters, including health hazard identification, workplace surveillance, medical‑legal documentation, asbestos abatement, lead based paint, ionizing and non‑ionizing radiation, thermo‑luminescent dosimetry, air emissions, drinking water, wastewater discharges, hazardous wastes, ATSDR activities, pesticide use, environmental noise, assessment, sampling, and other monitoring.
- Researches industrial operations and develops, implements, and executes surveillance strategies, inspections and evaluations of operational facilities and activities to detect and eliminate health hazards.
- Writes industrial facility case files on installation industrial shops in accordance with AFI 48‑145.
- Manages environmental sampling, analysis and monitoring requirements; performs ambient, source and substance tests and monitoring; compiles and evaluates pollution emission inventories.
- Serves as the Base Radiation Safety Officer for radio‑frequency, ionizing, and laser radiation; develops and implements local directives for the base radiation program; interprets TLD reports; ensures compliance with applicable directives; develops and monitors local emergency cleanup procedures.
- Reviews and provides input to the installation Environmental Engineer regarding federal and state environmental permit applications.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education:
A bachelor’s or higher degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or a bachelor’s degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry (including organic chemistry) and 18 additional semester hours of related coursework; or certification from the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (formerly ABIH).

Additional Requirements:
Must be a member of the Oregon Air National Guard or be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the Air National Guard in the appropriate military grade.
