TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDSLight to medium physical demand. Must be able to stand/sit for periods of time at computer terminal. Must be able to respond quickly to demands for delivery to nursing units of STAT medications and code blue situations. Must be able to read and interpret physician orders. Communication with nursing staff and physicians orally, via phone and in writing when needed. Must be able to prepare I.V. admixtures, as needed, utilizing laminar flow hood or biological safety cabinet.
ESSENTIALJOB FUNCTIONS
- Prepare and dispense medications using appropriate techniques and following the hospital’s policies and procedures.
- Design, recommend, monitor, and evaluate patient-specific pharmacotherapy.
- Provide concise, applicable, and timely responses to requests for drug information from healthcare providers and patients.
- Provide medication‑use education to patients and caregivers.
- Ensure continuity of pharmaceutical care to and from the acute and ambulatory patient‑care settings.
- Participate in the established process for assessing, managing, and reporting medication errors.
- Participate in the management of medical emergencies.
- Assume responsibility for the organization’s ongoing adherence to its medication‑use policies.
- Provide in‑service education to physicians, nurses, and other practitioners as needed.
- Participate in the hospital’s formulary process.
- Participate in the development or modification of policies for the use of medications in the hospital.
- Contribute to the achievement of the organization’s goals through effectively participating in or leading committees and work groups.
- Comply in all activities with accreditation, legal, regulatory, and safety requirements.
- Participate in the departmental performance improvement program.
- Manage time effectively to fulfill practice responsibilities.
- Maintain a professional image.
- Maximize work efficiency through the use of computers and other technologies, including automated dispensing units (Pyxis).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
