Position: Biological Science Research Tech 1 - Potato Inspector

Starting salary will be commensurate with skills, education, and experience.

Job Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill two part-time (approximately 16-hours per week), seasonal (September – November) Biological Sciences Technician 1 positions for the Seed Lab in the Department of Crop & Soil Science at Oregon State University (OSU). This position is located in Klamath Falls and Union County, Oregon. This position will perform seasonal work in Klamath or Union County and adjacent area counties.

This position is to primarily assist with the inspection of potato tubers during the harvest inspections (September through early November). The incumbent will also sample and tag seed lots in Klamath Basin or Union County area. Assisting with inspections of other crops such as mint and cereals, may be included on an intermittent basis.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two years of college-level courses in (specific field of biological science); OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to locate and work in remote rural fields independently. Effective communication and organizational skills. Ability to interact and communicate successfully and inclusively, both in writing and verbally, with a broad and diverse audience in a professional, positive and friendly manner.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Experience with potato grade inspections, mint, or small grain crops for factors important to Seed Certification.
  • Experience working with local Ag Extension officials.
  • Familiarity and experience in potato production or inspections.
  • Geographical knowledge of the Klamath Basin or Union County areas in regards to location of remote fields and surrounding areas.
Working Conditions/Schedule

This position will perform seasonal work in Klamath or Union County and adjacent area counties. Work is performed independently, following pre-established guidelines, and for the most part, in remote outdoor fields with exposure to sun, wind, dust, low and high temperatures. This role regularly performs independently within the Klamath or Union County areas and involves extensive driving to remote field locations.

Must have the ability to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally 100 pounds. Must be able to walk long distances over rough ground in windy, hot or cold conditions.
