Overview

The Technical Services Manager will manage our QC program for 22 Quarries and 1 sales yard in North Carolina and provide technical support to sales and customers. They will be responsible for approximately two direct reports and have a dotted line of responsibility to the quality control technicians based on every site in North Carolina. They will have direct technical responsibility for 4 quarries in the Raleigh area while their direct reports will have responsibility for the remaining sites in NC.

They will manage to troubleshoot technical issues with aggregate, asphalt, and concrete and support our aggregate crushing operations regarding production efficiencies, plant analysis, etc. They will oversee exploration testing of new aggregate and sand sources, be expected to participate in state trade association technical committees, and work with and maintain relationships with NCDOT technical and construction personnel.

What You'll Do
  • Promote Safety. Take an active role in prioritizing safety for yourself and others to ensure all assigned plants have zero accidents and comply with all Vulcan policies and procedures.
  • Manage Employee Relations. Provide strong leadership, training, team building, and supervision to all operational employees to support the operational function of the business. Guide all recruitment, training, development, and retention strategies for employees.
  • Industry Best Practices. The person possesses a working knowledge of aggregate, asphalt, and ready‑mix concrete plant operations and an extensive understanding of ASTM, DOT, and AASHTO testing procedures. The person must be knowledgeable in product‑related specifications and finished products.
  • Maintain Compliance. Ensure all assigned plants comply with Vulcan's safety and operations policies and procedures. Work closely with Company resources to ensure that all present and future permits and reclamation plans are current to expand Company mining operations. Ensure that the material is prepared with specifications and quality standards.
  • Manage Process Improvement. Direct process improvement goals and objectives for assigned sites to meet productivity and efficiency goals. Establish and measure performance standards for technical support groups.
  • Ensure Economic Profit. Manage the annual budget process. Ensure assigned plants meet or exceed budget goals and objectives, improve return on their assets, and direct the capital budget for each site to ensure that all capital projects are completed according to AFE and cost projections.
  • Coach and Guide Others. Provide strong leadership skills by motivating and mentoring all employees. Set performance standards for employees and monitor performance.
Qualifications Skills You'll Need
  • Education. A degree in Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering, or Geology is preferred.
  • Experience. Five years or more of experience supervising production employees, preferably at an aggregate, sand/gravel, concrete, or asphalt plant, is preferred.
  • Leadership and Management Skills. Must provide strong leadership and guidance to employees, both direct and indirect reports. Must be able to motivate and maintain interpersonal relationships.
  • Operational Knowledge. Must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of rock and sand mining, ready‑mix concrete, and/or asphalt operations and equipment, MSHA regulations, engineering principles and procedures, and quality control systems and processes.
