Roadway Design Transportation Engineering Specialist 3 & 4 supports Project Teams, technical divisions, and Region Operations through the application of Department specifications, policies, technical guidance, and procedures into the design of roadway-related assets. The role collaborates with technical disciplines and Project Teams to prioritize safety and cohesiveness for roadway design elements, supporting TDOT's project delivery process.
These specialists continuously evaluate performance indicators to implement acquired knowledge into the design of roadway elements, mitigating the Department's risk and increasing performance as part of TDOT's strategic vision.
The role collaborates with internal and external stakeholders—including Project Teams, TDOT Divisions, Regions, and contractors—to transform critical project control activities into a quality deliverable that aligns with the goals of the Asset Management Division. Specialists must effectively articulate roadway concepts through training, mentoring, and collaboration within a matrix organization.
Responsibilities- Serve as a resource for Project Teams by applying the Project Delivery Network (PDN) to define the scope of work related to roadway design elements; complete roadway plans and all related deliverables through all stages of the PDN process and in alignment with the project's scope, schedule, and budget; ensure all pay items and associated costs are accurately accounted for in the project estimate related to roadway elements.
- Integrate Quality Management into all deliverables to proactively address plan errors, avoid ROW delays, and minimize change orders; address and resolve all comments obtained from Quality Control reviews.
- Provide designs for roadway elements using engineering software, including vertical and horizontal geometrics, open channel flow designs for flows less than 500 cfs, closed stormwater systems, erosion protection and sediment control, signing and pavement marking, permit assessments, permit sketches, and traffic control; determine project footprints in coordination with TDOT Environment and Right-of-Way Divisions.
