Staff Associate Architect or Engineer, Capital Projects - UT System

The Staff Associate Architect or Engineer will manage projects primarily in East Tennessee, servicing UTK, UTC, UT Southern, and various UT Institute of Agriculture campuses throughout the system. The candidate will oversee projects from programming through construction and assist division management and university administrators with the planning and administration of the university’s capital program.

Responsibilities
  • Participates in the evaluation for the selection of architect/engineer and contractor firms for capital projects.
  • Provides evaluations and feedback for services throughout the design and construction process.
  • Coordinates design services and capital projects, reviewing designs for each phase, including: review and recommendation of payments for design service providers.
  • Coordinates bidding for construction, receives and evaluates bids, and recommends award of contracts.
  • Reviews contractor shop drawings and other submittals, monitors construction progress, resolves problems, reviews change orders, and conducts monthly reviews and approvals of requests for payment to contractors during construction.
  • Coordinates substantial and final completion inspections, delivers project records, operations & maintenance manuals, provides training for facilities services, and oversees construction close‑out and completion/occupancy.
  • Coordinates collection of feedback from building occupants via a post‑occupancy evaluation process.
  • Assists the Department of Capital Projects in reviewing submissions for all capital projects.
  • Coordinates project site selection for specific capital projects.
  • Coordinates, develops, and/or evaluates facilities programs for new and renovation projects.
  • Assists in master planning and master planning updates for the campuses and institutions, including facilities assessment needs.
Qualifications
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of experience as a registered professional; must be a licensed architect (or engineer).
  • Possess technical expertise and judgment to identify and diagnose potential problems and solutions.
  • Have experience working with external design professionals and contractors.
  • Have experience in design, project management, and construction management.
  • Have experience managing multi‑discipline projects and coordinating work among them.
  • Possess effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact effectively with government officials and architectural and engineering professionals is essential.
  • Preferred:
    Experience in facilities associated with higher education.
