Overview

Transmission Ops & Planning Fall Student Engineer – Knoxville, TN. The intern will work with the Transmission Ops & Planning team to support projects focused on grid reliability, power system operations, and emerging energy technologies through software validation, technical research, and knowledge synthesis. This position is targeted for the 2026 Fall semester (August–December).

Responsibilities
  • Testing and/or debugging Python software (Safe-T Net tool), including providing feedback about potential issues and improvements.
  • Conduct literature reviews of topics such as global operations practices, grid codes and standards (particularly related to I /GFM and large loads), market structures, and interconnection processes.
  • Review/aggregate publicly available information regarding recent significant grid events (i.e., outages).
  • Summarize research in technical briefs.
Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing a Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • Programming experience in Python, including debugging and troubleshooting code.
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to review technical literature and synthesize findings into clear written summaries.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research-oriented environment.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Hourly rate range for Student positions varies by degree level:
    Undergraduate: $16-29/hr;
    Masters: $27-33/hr;
    Ph.D.: $31-36/hr rates are estimates and may vary based on education, experience, skills, abilities, internal equity, market data, and geographic location.
  • As an EPRI Student, you will not participate in EPRI’s Benefit Programs (health insurance, retirement, vacation, sick leave, holiday pay) except as required by law; you are eligible for Social Security, State Disability Insurance, and Workers’ Compensation Insurance.
  • Relocation assistance is not provided; students are responsible for relocation costs if required to relocate to an EPRI office.
